Foxmarks: Disabling Favicon Sync

From Foxmarks Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

If you are using a version of Foxmarks 2 and syncing with your own server, you may find that sync is considerably slower than with Foxmarks 1.0.1. This is because Foxmarks by default syncs favicons, and those favicons increase by 3x or more the amount of data that Foxmarks exchanges with your server every time it syncs.

(Note that this is not a problem if you are using the Foxmarks server, as the Foxmarks server exchanges only changed information with the extension, also known as "deltas.")

To support people who would like to use Foxmarks 2 with their own server and prefer increased sync speed over sync of favicons, Foxmarks 2 allows you to disable favicon syncing. To do so, access the about:config page in Firefox (simply type "about:config" into the location field) and create a new boolean setting called foxmarks.disableIconSync and set it to true (to create a new setting, right-click anywhere on the page, then follow the steps after that).

Creating this setting will cause two behavioral changes in the synchronizer:

  • The synchronizer will not generate icon data in sync files.
  • The synchronizer will not delete a favicon from your system if it is absent from the sync file.

Note that if you disable favicon syncing on one computer, you'll want to disable it on all of your computers. If computer A has favicon sync disabled, and computer B does not, if computer B reads a sync file from the server generated by computer A (and thus doesn't contain favicon data), computer B will delete all of its favicons. Please be careful.
