Foxmarks: Give us Feedback
From Foxmarks Wiki
Usernames(assuming) and passwords are not URL encoded when using private ftp
I've seen some people say that using their own server and a "." or a "\" in their password, authentication doesn't work. For me it was a "#", but when I changed it to a "%23", it worked fine. I'm sure a simple if/then for the username and password will do the trick. I'm too swamped now to write a patch. I'd have put this into 'Known bugs' but it's locked. Works great now. Thanks to all who have contributed. Great job!
I get an failure message that cookie cannot be set, but thats not true
it is not true, because other applicatons can do, i have firefox configured to accept all cookies and just for a try to ask every times and in this time i had accepted all requests for cookies. i also have configured *.foxmarks.com to enable for all cookies. but always i get this failure if i try to first load down my bookmarks on this maschine.. i use the newest firefox(2.0.0.14) and foxmarks(2.0.46.9).
- Did you check the F.A.Q. linked in the upper left of this page? It sounds like you've already checked Foxmarks: Error: Could not set cookie, right? If none of those work, feel free to contact our support email address. --Foxworth 17:20, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
- i have checked this tip, but it has not changed anything.
where i can find the support email address? i have not seen any..
- It's linked off of the "Main" link in the upper left. --Foxworth 20:59, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
- After today upgrading to 2.0.47.2 the Wizard starts an was able to verify my account, but on download of the bookmarks i get: ...Failed to parse server response
- Now all works fine. The last error '..failed to parsee..' was because of an inhouse security-tool that checks all downloads and has in this case broken the download and so foxmark coult not download. Now i have an exception for foxmark on my computer and it works! Thanks for help.
- Not sure I was actually that much help here, but glad to hear you got it working again! --Foxworth 00:08, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
Cannot login into my.foxmarks.com with Nokia S60v3 webbrowser (webkit based)
I am sure of correct name/password being used, since I can login using FF3. Also, please do not forget mobile users when developing my.foxmarks.com. Current v2 in development, is bloated and will not render correctly neither in Opera Mobile 8.65, Opera Mini 4.1, or S60Webkit. (Altough login works on Opera Mobile and Opera Mini)
- I assure you, we're doing our best to cover the mobile platforms. From your description, though, I'm not sure that you're using http://mobile.foxmarks.com/, are you? --Foxworth 21:03, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
- I did try both my.foxmarks.com and mobile.foxmarks.com - after authorization there is no warning that login or password is wrong, but after I press link to "my foxmarks" in the upper line of the page, I am again redirected to login page.
- It sounds like your browser isn't accepting cookies. If that doesn't seem to be the problem, please email us at the link lower down on this page. Thanks! --Foxworth 16:25, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
- My browser accepts cookies. In fact, cookie based authorization works on all other pages, except foxmarks.
I would like to see other platforms
13 February 2008
Great plugin, I use it all the time, but I would like to see support for the Nokia n800/n810 internet tablets. It's really the kind of device where foxmarks would be extremely useful - i.e. I hardly ever bookmark on my IT but usualy browse alot on it.
Thanks !
- Have you tried using http://my.foxmarks.com/mobile/? --Foxworth 23:55, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
Pity, such a great plugin is not available for Firefox 3 yet... I'm currently using 3 Beta 5...
Can you guys please update it for Firefox 3?
Thanks!
Amazing plugin - best thing ive downloaded in ages
24 January 2008
Really good plugin, no need for the likes of del.icio.us anymore. Works seemlessly in the background. Thanks.
Very good and handy plug-in. Congrats! I hope I can use it for a long time...
Works on this platform
Firefox 3 beta 4 was included on Ubuntu 8.04, the new upgrade of Ubuntu after Gutsy, Foxmarks did not work on it but today Friday April 4, 2008 I was accepted as a beta and it works great for me, sync all my bookmarks.
"Searching through bookmarked-websites" feature
24 January 2008
It would be really great if my.foxmarks.com also included a feature which would let you perform searches through all (or selections of) websites of the myfoxmarks book-marks. This is a feature that is only partly available in google-bookmarks and would really give foxmarks an advantage over google if this could be developed.
- Interesting concept--do you mean just searching through the bookmarks' titles and descriptions (which is already implemented in my.foxmarks.com), or full text searches of the websites' contents? --Foxworth 23:31, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
It is the best.
Accidentally remove status icon
12 January 2008
If you right click on the status icon in the lower right corner, for example to see the status, the Show Status Icon toggle is very close, and it's easy to accidentally trigger it. If you do, the icon is gone, and you cannot use it to check the status any longer. --Helge.stenstrom 22:58, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
- We see this behavior mostly under Linux systems, as I recall. If you accidentally turn off the status icon, you can re-enable it by going to Tools > Foxmarks > Show Status Icon -- one of our longer-term issues is to figure out a better way to display that option there without making it too easy to turn off, but for now there's at least a fix you can do. Thanks for pointing this out! --Foxworth 18:23, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
Procedure to get past "Verifying Account" hang when using local FTP server with V2.0.34
21 Dec 2007
I recently started getting popups and the Addon Updater offering an update to Foxmarks. I updated two machines to 2.0.34 and tried to use it, but I get the "verifying account" hang when trying to sync with my own FTP server. Until that issue is resolved, I would like to turn off the automatic update prompting for Foxmarks, but I can't find that setting. ~~TimG11
- That's very strange--I refused the update once in one of my browsers, and it hasn't asked me again since. Are you only seeing this when you restart the browser? You can disable the check for all Firefox add-ons under the settings menu--I found it under Advanced > Update > Installed Add-ons. --Foxworth 18:44, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
22 Dec 2007
- I was getting a prompt to update Foxmarks every time I re-started Firefox, from the Addons dialog box that prompts for the almost weekly updates to NoScript. After finding a way around the hang, I don't need to disable the updates any more.
- Here is a procedure that works to get past the "Verifying Account" hang: Before updating any machines to Foxmarks V2, get them all in sync using V1. Then update the first machine to 2.0.34, and do a Manual Overwrite (Upload of local bookmarks to overwrite the server). Then update the other machines to 2.0.34, and do a Manual Overwrite (Download to overwrite local bookmarks). If all machines have been synced using V1 beforehand, you won't lose any information. After downloading and overwriting the local bookmarks, Foxmarks will then sync with the local FTP server without the "verifying account" hang. ~~Timg11
- Upgrading to the just-released version 2.0.38 appeared to have fixed this problem for me. I got a sync between two machines using a local ftp server without having to go through the procedure described above. Thanks!
Duplicate NIDS
20 Dec 2007
I also have 2.0.34 and Fox 2.0.0.11. Since the upgrade, Foxmarks has continued to fail. I get:
[2007-12-20 18:01:11] Synchronization failed. Error is (new Error("Conflict: duplicate nids detected on
insert pGOOY1 bnid:null", "chrome://foxmarks/content/foxmarks-core.js", 100))

[2007-12-20 18:01:11] Returned error: Synchronization error(3)
Any ideas as to how to correct?
- This happens when your computer loses its connection to the Foxmarks server while performing an upload of your data; the upload is written to the server properly, but when your browser tries to connect again, it causes some conflicts. We're working on a long-term fix for this, but in the meantime, simply uploading to the server or downloading from the server should fix it. --Foxworth 00:56, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
This problems appears to be getting worse. I use Foxmarks 2.0.36 on 3 different Windows PCs. Sometimes everything works but now I'm getting

[2008-01-02 21:39:07] Returned error: Synchronization error(3)
What bothers me is 1) Why is this a transient problem. My network isn't changing, and 2) This kind of thing never happened with Version 1. Since Version 2 is supposed to do syncing more efficiently, I'm surprised to see this kind of error. Your explanation above doesn't make it clear whether the problem is on the client or the server, so I don't know if I should just try syncing over and over again until it works, or should I give up. Doing the complete bookmark upload or download really isn't a solution because then I'm back to having one PC be the "master", which is what I'm trying to avoid by using Foxmarks in the first place.
One the other hand, Foxmarks sure is nice when it works!!
- The problem is between the client and the server; trying over and over again isn't likely to fix the problem. It's usually only one computer at a time having the problem, is that right? Doing an upload won't put you into a "master" situation, since subsequent synchronization on other computers will allow you to merge any changes together. You also have the option of trying out our alpha release of version 2.0.37, which might fix this (after you do a download/upload to fix it). Let us know if it works for you! Thanks! --Foxworth 19:05, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
Abrupt Cessation of Function
December 20, 2007
My computer recently auto-updated to Foxmarks 2.0.34 and also updated to Firefox 2.0.0.11 - after which Foxmarks will no longer sync either in auto or manual. It hangs up at "Verifying Account" even though I can successfully log on manually on this website. Sync does not work from either of my computers, nor from the FoxMark website.
- We're experiencing some heavy load on the Foxmarks servers right now; see http://blog.foxmarks.com/ for details and further updates. --Foxworth 00:54, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
More Trouble with 2.0.34
Getting Foxmarks 2.0.34 to work your own server is ugly. You get "verifying account..." when trying to sync that does absolutely nothing. The only way to get a sync going is to upload your bookmarks and then sync any subsequent changes (basically overwrite what's on the server). To get additional PCs to work you just have to download the new file and overwrite existing bookmarks. It's a good idea to sync all your computers before you upgrade!
Also, even when you get it going, there's a nasty toolbar glitch. The personal toolbar folder disappears from the toolbar. It's still in your bookmarks but now there is a new empty folder that appears on the toolbar called "bookmarks toolbar folder".
Ugly. This is my second attempt to upgrade (tried 2.0.32 previously and gave up). I loved the old version and think I am going back to it, again.
Also, agree with the person below that support options. How about an online user discussion forum so we can all pitch in and help each other? This Wiki just isn't up to the task.
- People seem to be using http://blog.foxmarks.com/ well for that purpose. Regarding your concerns above, when you say "your own server", do you mean using it with your own server, or with the Foxmarks server? We're working diligently on getting the Foxmarks servers to respond appropriately, but for your own server support check out the blog for some folks' input, and feel free to make some updates to Foxmarks: Using Your Own Server. As for the toolbar funkiness, what you describe can happen when synchronizing with bookmarks on different OS platforms due to an oddity in the way that Firefox creates the default toolbar folder. --Foxworth 00:53, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks Foxworth. I'm using an ftp server on server space provided by my ISP. Since I posted I see two other people have posted above that they are also running into the "verifying account" problem. In the upgrade FAQ it states that this message appears "because hundreds of thousands of clients are all trying to connect to our servers at once" but in my case and at least one of the posters above no connection to your servers is involved, so what gives? (Note that I have no trouble logging onto my ftp server space and upload and downloading files using FireFtp. And uploading and downloading bookmarks using Foxmarks isn't an issue. The problems only occurs when one tries to sync for the first time.)
You are correct about the toolbar issue. I initially updated on an XP machine and then tried to synchronize on a machine running OpenSuse 10.3. Any work arounds planned for that or is this something the people over at Mozilla need to fix?
- You'll want to check out (and participate in) the wiki page about using your own server: Foxmarks: Using Your Own Server. Since server configuration can vary so widely, we're taking a DIY approach for people using their own servers. --Foxworth 19:32, 24 December 2007 (UTC)
- Version 2.0.38 seems to have fixed the verifying account problem when using ones own server.
Trouble with 2.0.34
- 2.0.34 syncs way too often, causing significant problems with using web apps. But at least now with that cool Status icon in the lower right I can see that Foxmarks is syncing 95-99.999% of the time Firefox is open. Jesus, wtf is Foxmarks doing, fellating the server? Should I move my Foxmarks to my own server?
- I blush at your word choice. We're working on fixing this issue; check the blog for updates! --Foxworth 00:50, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
Please improve support
- AFAICT, support is wiki only, are you serious? I don't even know how to use this damn thing. Took me an eon to figure that Suggestions is closed to edits, WTF? Where do I ask questions? [[|Foxmarks:_Reporting_a_Bug|Oh, sorta.]] Can't I just e-mail them somewhere?
</wokeuponwrongsideofbed>
- Actually, we try to splash our support email address in the places it seems useful, such as the main page of the wiki and a couple other pages. If you have suggestions on somewhere else we should put it, let us know! (For future reference, you can write to support@foxmarks.com, though this week we're a little overwhelmed and might not be able to respond in a timely fashion). --Foxworth 21:30, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
I want to pay :)
I didn't find a way to donate, but other people's same wish. If paypal donations would help speeding up the service, I think I'm not the only one, who would donate...
- Thanks for the offer! I'm not sure PayPal currently offers monetary transfers in amounts necessary to immediately fix up the issues we've encountered, but we definitely appreciate the thought. We're still working out the right way to "take donations", so keep an eye on http://blog.foxmarks.com/ for updates! --Foxworth 21:33, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
Fantastic service
I stumbled across foxmarks the other day, and have used it to sync two windows systems, one linux system and my Mac at home. The website is awesome.
The only flaw? I was looking for a way to contribute and could not find a donation facility (I'm not a coder)

FoxMarks Rules
I wrote about it in my blog. Go foxmarks! http://idisposable.blogspot.com/2007/06/pick-firefox-plug-that-you-cant-live.html
What a great tool. Thanks!
I just restored a Spamed page. Looks like you need to restrict editing here.
Also, I am recently getting sync.foxmarks.com certificate validation errors. You need to include a notice on moving your server from foxmarks.com (a better name!) to foxcloud.com
Solved my problem of home office computer and my travel/business computer getting out of whack with bookmarks. My schedule has me at either home office or travel. It is very easy to have your favorite bookmark on one computer and not the other. Foxmark took care of the problem so I don't have to copy/paste bookmarks between computers. And since my bookmarks are on the web I can access them from any computer. And I don't have to concern myself with backups for bookmarks. Great service, I will write you up on my blog as well.
Vandalism
You really need to restrict move pages to long registered users. Otherwise you're going to be vandalized. All of User:Ashley's contributions need to be reverted/deleted. notafish 07:01, 12 March 2007 (EDT)
Remarks
Great plugin, I've shared this with many people. Could it one day also sync the search engines stored in firefox?
Adding the ability to share bookmarks
I might in the future work with a larger team of developers. Its currently just me. It would be great if you could share bookmarks (or portions of your bookmarks with other users). Also, a corporate server version would be great for organizations that want to share/synch bookmarks but would rather have the bookmarks stored on a corporate intranet rather than the internet.
It would be great if a user could mark which folders could be shared or not-shared (and on a group by group basis!). - user:peterc
(At the least) I am seconding this bit of feedback about sharing. I could really use this as a freelancer. For it would be great to have clients' bookmarks at the ready and in sync without having to export/import/edit/export/import, login to proper foxmarks account/edit, and/or using some other workaround. - user:foxguin
- This feature is now available! See http://blog.foxmarks.com/?p=122 for more details. --Foxworth 18:21, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
Great tool, many thanks! One request..
Could you help to make the password(lists) also synchronized?
This would not be secure. If this feature is enabled, have it make a huge warning, and ask 3 or four times warning them of the dangers 202.45.119.7 20:05, 26 August 2007 (EDT)
- Also a Seamonkey Add-on would be great since it is mozila as well. Thanks,
This would be nice 202.45.119.7 20:05, 26 August 2007 (EDT)
A very useful tool! Thanks!
However, it's got some really nice things it could do with some tweaking.... 1) Save Foxfire program preferences too.
a. Permit different preferences for different machines b. Permit different Bookmark (subsets) on different machines. c. skins?
2) Version for Thunderbird?
a. Email settings b. address books
(again permit (subsets) for different machines)
Basically, anything which is synchronized should be tagable with a code determining which machine(s) use it. Default would be "all" for which machines.
Posted on 23 April 08: I second what the person above we says. It would be great if one could a) select only specific folders to be shared. b) Furthermore it would be great if one could define a "point of insertion".
For example I want to have access to my work bookmarks at home (but not the other way around), therefore I would like to synchronize my work bookmarks only and insert them in a bookmark folder which I would for example call "Work-Bookmarks" on my home computer.
I guess the easiest way to implement a) would be to sync all bookmarks up from the client to the server but then have a checkboxes to decide what you want to sync down (all or only specific bookmark folders and bookmarks). This would have the advantage that all bookmarks from all my computers would be on the foxmarks server, but I could select which ones I would like to pull back down into firefox on the client side. Obviously, on second thought there are some problems - I guess it comes down to seperate the bookmarks on the server (and the client!) into machine specific sets. As the poster above me says - this could be done by tags.
Posted on 8th Feb.'07 from France: This is a great little add-on for FF (i'm on 2.0)& I just updated to the 0.88 version hoping it would have fixed the ONE problem I have with this extension: the bookmarks on-line are never in alphabetical order tho I just realized that when I clic on my Bookmarks Icon in the navigation bar it's exactly the same (very weird considering that when I 'manage' the bookmarks I put them in A-Z order)But when I open them in my AIO sidebar they are (thank goodness)in A-Z order! Can you confirm whether this is a problem w/FF or Foxmarks. I also use a great on-line program for a couple years now called PLPage; very nice & you can import/export your bookmarks & has a button you can use in IE links bar (tho I very rarely use IE of course) Anyway, thank you
- User : DS2944 - If XBEL is choose by Foxmarks it will be possible to use widgets like Myabookmarks in Netvibes. Thanks for your job.

- Very handy, I use it to sync between laptop (thinkpad) and desktop (mac), but what about Internet Explorer? Especially for locked-down environments, a few Javascript 'link' buttons and a popup window should sort that out.
- A great small tool. I use it without problems with my firefox 2.0 on different machines and also with the portable firefox 2.0. These small things the computer-world needs ;) -- Frank 15. Jan 2007

I just added this below to the Foxmarks Suggestions Wiki as well... Sorry to double post it...
- I would love it if you could get Foxmarks to be compatible with SeaMonkey or create a slightly downgraded version of it, if needed for it to be compatible. I love this extention and use it with 3 different computers and now I have just started to use SeaMonkey occassionally (its nice to have the web browser with email and newsgroups and IRC chat all in one that also support Mozilla plugins, extensions and themes) for when I want to use other larger programs at the same time that I want to check a few random things on a website and keep an eye on my mail and not use up too much of my computer's resources doing so (I want them for the other progams/games). That's it. I love the ability to create a new bookmark on one computer, have it auto sync to the server, have my laptop in the other room be turned on and auto sync with it's "new" update and I can then just wander into the other room, decide I want to go to that new website and have it be there already, just waiting for me, in my bookmarks list. Though I also agree, that a program to sync Extensions and Themes would rule too... - Ivy Vine 11/11/06.
I have a great idea..! Why dont we and more options to Foxmakrs such as the ability to edit your "online" Foxmarks page to add delete or format the links. Also more options in the FF Foxmarks interface such as the ability to check or not check certain folders to add etc. Sleepless
- I second the "great idea"! It would be *really* useful to be able to edit Foxmarks online. Inga216.95.96.168 14:32, 20 February 2007 (EST)
- Hi. Ubuntu Linux 6.10 (edgy) with Firefox 2.0 and Foxmarks 0.84 throws a "DNS Unknown host", even when the address given is an IP. I've tried "sync.foxcloud.com", "sync.foxmarks.com", and "69.80.213.133", all of these give the DNS error. I've also tried using FTP, HTTP, and HTTPS, all fail. Downloads and Uploads both fail. The last sync successfully occured in late October. I have a similar setup on a OSX machine which works fine with identical settings. I loaded up wireshark and discovered that Foxmarks was trying to resolve the hostname defined for the computer in /etc/hosts, even though the hostname doesn't actually go anywhere real.
- That doesn't make much sense to us. I'd recommend having a look in your foxmarks.log file (or sending it to us) to understand what's going on. --Todd 17:28, 10 November 2006 (EST)
- It would be great if it was possible to keep local 'bookmarks panel folder' untouched during update. I use FF at different places, home, work etc and the work's quick links on the toolbar very differ from these ones at home (corporate sites VS mail, news & games sites). It would be enough to have a checkbox "update bookmark panel folder" in the settings. How do you like this ? Storing sites' icons would be usefull also. Now running FF on a new computer 1st time I have a dozen of the same icons on the toolbar. Kav 81.200.13.1 06:45, 8 November 2006 (EST)

- I stopped using F.M. for a while because initially it would kill my RSS feeds. I'm an RSS hound! I use it to stay up on my favorite news subjects but I digress. I stumbled across it again the other day on one of my 3 pc's when upgrading to FF2.0 and gave it a try. To my surprise it kept my rss's alive! THANK YOU! This is FANTASTIC NEWS! - Great extension indeed - i used to use bookmark synchronizer, but this extension is smaller and smarter - if there would be any favicon support, it would be unbeatable... 134.60.65.112 06:53, 13 October 2006 (EDT)
- A great extension, I just started using it and have found it really useful. Since I use Firefox both at home and at work, being able to have full access to my bookmarks (which are up-to-date) is very helpful. I have a suggestion, but it may have been suggested before, as it seems like an obvious direction for the evolution of this utility. I now have firefox installed on a USB Flash drive (by changing the setting in the about:config, it is possible to turn off, or change cache and profile location) If I was able to setup my bookmark location as a direct link to the foxmarks server, my Firefox bookmarks would always be up-to-date, and I would not have to worry about security issues of having my settings at more than one location. Since I am running Firefox from the USB flash drive, my Foxmark bookmark settings would always be secure, and I would only need to install the Foxmarks extension once. Just a thought =;-)> Thanks for a great extension,--Daniel 16:01, 3 October 2006 (EDT)

This means something like "error while parsing the sync-file". I got this error message on both of my computers. The error appears when I try so start the sync manually. The last good sync is from August, the 19th. Do you have any idea which could be the reason for this? I use the newest official Firefox version and updated the updates for foxmarks as well. Thank you! 82.83.204.222 12:17, 27 September 2006 (EDT)
- It sounds like your sync file has become corrupted on our server. Please see Foxmarks: Error: Failed to parse sync file for more info. --Todd 12:23, 27 September 2006 (EDT)
Thank you for your help! It works now as good as in the past!82.83.253.64 11:59, 29 September 2006 (EDT)
- Is there anyway to add a bookmark when using a public computer and my.foxcloud.com? if not then that would be usefull. Otherwise i have to e-mail myself the bookmark and bookmark it at a home computer. Thanks
- Great extension. There's this one thing, though, that i would like to be added: sync exclusion for selected folders. There are these bookmarks that i only use at work or only use at home, so its an annoyance, having them shared. Otherwise great job, keep it up.
- I am a fan of firefox mozilla and been using this since i got my own laptop about 3 yrs back.I like many extensions/themes and keep searching for new addons every weekend.I stumbled up on this new Foxcloud bookmarks Sync. I installed it and synced my bookmarks online at their server.I without even thinking for a sec entered my master password when the installation prompted. I am now worried because i have stored all my passwords in firefox mozilla. Do you guys at foxcloud have an access to the user's bookmarks.I work for a product company in bayarea, we have passwords that override every other password in the system and i guess you do have like that.I much more worried because now a days its been so common, corporate laptops/desktops being stolen, getting lost, so i ask u guys at FOXCLOUD, how safe is the user's data in ur servers/machines????????????????
What precautions have you taken in regards to this. 14:06, 17 August 2006 (EDT)
- Finally a bookmark sychronizing extension/program that really does what it is supposed to--and it does it perfectly! My two computers, laptop and desktop, are totally in sync now, which is so helpful because I regularly surf the net and bookmark on both computers and it used to be such a drag to export to a flash drive, etc, to get the bookmarks files on the same page (pun intended, ha!). If you work on more than one computer, well, how do I say this...this is an absolutely-fabulous-must-have-extension-you-can't-be-without! It's 5.5 on a scale of 1-5. Kudos to the developer! I bow before thee.
- Great extension. It was working fine at first but now every time I launch my browser my bookmarks are wiped out except for a few recent entries in the toolbar folder. --savgpncl Mcnkldzyn 23:36, 29 July 2006 (EDT)
- I'm getting the same Unknown error 202 as another user mentions on this page. Like them, I'm synchronising with an FTP server - in my case I have no choice, all my internet connections *must* go through the proxy server, or they just time out. I managed to synchronise two computers, but I have no idea how as Foxmarks didn't seem to create any new files on the ftp server... and within a few hours it stopped working. I think the problem may have been caused by me choosing to keep the local version of the bookmark file, hoping this would upload that to the server. Something went wrong anyway. --gavin. 129.180.1.224 04:59, 28 July 2006 (EDT)
- Great extension that works on all of the computers I have it on (though one is fussy). Wanted to try others but they all seemed to have drawbacks. In the next revision, please address 2 things: 1) High CPU usage and freezing browser during the synch that takes 1-2 minutes, and 2) While my bookmarks file is 16K, my bandwidth meter shows significantly more data being uploaded. I don't know the nuts & bolts, but seems odd. 68.11.47.236 23:38, 26 July 2006 (EDT)
- I just wanted to say how awesome of an idea this was. I tend to leave massive amounts of bookmarks on every computer I use, and this just makes life so easy. It's been months since I've installed it, and I completely forgot about it because it just works. 69.244.181.136 01:05, 8 July 2006 (EDT)
- This is surely an issue on my end but I don't really know how to try and fix it. I noticed on my machine at work, Foxmarks (0.72 on FireFox 1.5.0.4) shows my last sync was on June 9, 12:06 PM. If I choose "Synchronize Now", the following steps happen: Downloading Sync File, Performing Synchronization, Writing to Sync File, Connection Reset. I'm concerned about the "Connection Reset." This is not happening on my other computer at home...it synchronizes perfectly. Any ideas? -seether295 198.214.101.146 12:49, 13 June 2006 (EDT)
- I tried at first to get this going and to no avail ( part my fault and part there's) but listened to there advice and now this works like a charm, I am an avid firefox user and am very happy that I now have a way to keep all my computers up to date. - Question: I downloaded Foxmarks to firefox 1.5 on both my windows and Mac tiger. I created my account in windows with the wizard (and updated it) and verified the account on-line. When running the install wizard on my mac, I type in the user and password and a drop down box holding a cancel button and a question mark appears and I cannot use the wizard. I've restarted the fox and my computer and the same thing is happening...any ideas?64.4.117.206 15:31, 9 June 2006 (EDT)

- QUESTION: This SOUNDS like a good concept. I use BOTH PC (running XP) and Mac (running 10.4). DOES the extension run on both platforms? How about if I need to use a UNIX based OS on other than a Intel or PPC platform? Still run or I am limited? Thanks 198.151.13.15 10:40, 5 June 2006 (EDT) DTJ
- Yes, Foxmarks runs everywhere that Firefox runs. --Todd 11:10, 5 June 2006 (EDT)

- Great extension, now make it sync extension's also =)!!!
- Great idea, but not, yet, solid enough for me. Thanks for doing this extension. It's a great step forward for me to manage my numerous bookmarks across 3 different machines. Since I installed it during your server downtime, I chose my own FTP server (I also prefer this for privacy reasons). At first it worked as expected, but after a couple of days it started giving me "Unknown Error 202" messages. I could manually log into my server and rename the old foxmarks.xml and it would work another time. Then it locks up again. I am on broadband and the xml file is about 500 kb. Any ideas? 128.243.220.41 10:36, 16 May 2006 (EDT)Leif Oppermann

- Great extension! Just sits there and does exactly what it says on the tin. Installed on 3 machines, including one behind a very picky firewall/proxy server. Works like a charm - thanks. One minor suggestion: could we have a 'Sync now' button for the toolbar. 195.194.4.65 04:31, 15 May 2006 (EDT)Geoff Cusick
- This software is a piece of garbage. If you create an account online, then go to install the junk, it says unauthorized. It will only let you login threw the web. Piece of American Grabage as usual.

- I'm getting an error message saying that the install package is invalid. I have the latest version of Firefox which was released yesterday or the day before. --rhs255 4 May 2006 - 10:40 AM
- There is some installation problem lurking in Firefox or the Add-ons site; if you search the web you'll find many people encounter it downloading many different extensions. No one seems to know what causes it. Until the mystery is solved, you can download a version from our Foxmarks: Release Notes page, e.g., Foxmarks 0.67 is the version currently available on the Mozilla Add-ons site. --Todd 11:23, 4 May 2006 (EDT)

- Will the Mozilla Browser be supported? And how about Internet Explorer?
- Whenever i try to sync ma laptop with my desktop pc, the sync dialogue hands while desplaying "loading local datastore". The desktop pc is also the proxy for my Laptop, so could it be a port problem? normal http works without problems though
- I don't really understand why the proxy would cause the problem you describe. Could you please provide some more information? I'd especially like to know whether there's something in your Javascript Console. --Todd 12:00, 25 April 2006 (EDT)

- The error that you quote above signifies FF claiming that someone is trying to use a "malformed url" -- and it sounds like that malformed url is probably associated with a Livemark. Please contact us via email if you desire further assistance. --Todd 11:00, 26 April 2006 (EDT)
Keyboard Shortcuts
- The shortcut "CTRL-SHIFT-S" conflicts with the same shortcut from the web developer toolbar, which is a pretty popular extension. Can you make the shortcut customizable?
- This is our list of enhancements. As a work-around, you can re-order your extensions in the Extension Manager (right-click on an extension in the EM window to move it); the last extension in the list seems to have priority in case of keyboard shortcut conflicts. --Todd 12:03, 25 April 2006 (EDT)
- On Mac OS X with Firefox 3, neither re-ordering, nor reinstalling the Web Developer extension grants it priority to the "CMD-SHIFT-S" shortcut. When can we expect a real work-around or ability to change it? Frankly I'd settle for a way to turn Foxmarks shortcuts off entirely, as I don't find them useful, but that's just me. --mpmchugh 12:27, 17 June 2008 (PST)
- Not just you, mpmchugh. I second your motion. Set it and forget it. Seriously, how often do users need to open Foxmarks or do whatever Ctrl-Shift-S does? I installed it and have opened it at most three times in 18 months. foxguin 06:30, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
- A fix for this is available in the most recent version of Foxmarks. See our FAQ for details. --Foxworth 00:11, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
- Oh, recent version, huh? So that's why the foxmarks' status bar icon had a little thingy on it -- FF3 cookie issues -- so unintrusive! foxguin 06:30, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
- FAQ fix does not work for my FF3/WinXP setup. No such thing as foxmarks.shortcut in about:config. Searched on foxmarks... and saw nothing similar. foxguin 06:30, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
- Foxguin, which version of Foxmarks are you using? As mentioned in the FAQ entry, that feature is only available in our later 2.1 beta release. --Foxworth 17:23, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
Other stuff
- I would love to see a feature where you could specify exceptions to the sync. I have some content that would be found objectionable at work and would love to set it up so the rest of the bookmarks sync but just a couple of folders wouldn't. I would be totally happy with this extension if it would do that. (madj42) I second this. It would be great if I could sync only a subset of my bookmarks, or exclude a subset. 05JUN2006 (djg) Full ACK. This feature would help Foxmarks evolve from good to great. I have some bookmarks which I don't really like to sync on any PC due to security issues. If those could be excluded, I could use Foxmarks anywhere. 18MAR2007 (bell)
- Great! Smooth setup - it synched quickly and merged 2 seperate sets of bookmarks very well. Bookmark Duplicate Detector https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1553/ assisted in the final cleanup. I am very excited and will spread the word. Thanks! MWG 149.166.206.171 21:29, 18 April 2006 (EDT)
- Awesome! I set it up on my own servers (although it took a few tried until I realized that I wasn't supposed to name the xbel file in the path, as is done in BMS). Works great. Works quietly in the background without popping over my browser. Works much quicker than BMS too. I ain't going back to Bookmarks Synchronizer. Great job. Thanks!
- Follow up: I'd prefer some kind of status feedback so I know when it's working. On startup I think it's not working for 15 seconds until the new bookmarks pop up, and on close I don't know when its safe to terminate my pathetic dial-up.
- In the setup wizard, during "merging", I pressed the "Help"-button. The installer then seemed to have lost track of the progress of the merging process... -- Kit
- Installing Foxmarks on second and third windows PC (each XP SP2 Firefox 1.5.0.1) but when I try I get the following error

- This is almost certainly due to something unusual in your Firefox environment for these machines -- not something that we can affect from our end. Try this for a potential solution. --Todd 11:44, 1 March 2006 (EST)
- I have had this problem with other extentions. It occurs randomly for me. My solution is to right click the link, and select, save as, and save it somewhere on the computer, and then "drag" it to Firefox, and it will ask you to install it from the local copy. After that, all updates for the extention will download like normal if you choose to update.
- I am new to firefox and have been hunting for exactly for this. I have an XP instance and a version on MACos - plan to test that next. I look forward to developments.
- FoxMarks works very vell here with one XP and two Debian workstations. I am running my own DAV server and wonder if the python script used for My Foxcloud is freely availble of if its proprietary. (Stefan) 217.69.77.194 07:00, 20 February 2006 (EST)

- Been using FoxMarks on one PC OK for about a week (latest version of all software). Just installed on a 2nd PC and did a sync, supposedly to merge the bookmarks, and it completely overwrote the bookmarks on the 2nd PC. Very disappointing - especially since I didn't back them up first (what a fool I am). I'm wondering if it's because firefox was open on the 1st PC at the same time? Can I suggest a pop-up window that shows changes before they are made and allows the user to accept or cancel the merge?? This software is a great idea but it needs to work! --Dan
- Dan, sorry to hear this. You can check the FAQ for information about how to restore your bookmarks from backup. And it would be really helpful if you could send us your log file so we can diagnose the problem. --Todd 19:44, 17 February 2006 (EST)
- Am running FireFox 1.5.0.1 here on multiple XP units -- Foxmarks installed fine on one PC last night, but I experience download errors when trying to install on a 2nd system running the same version of FF. ----jbabe
- It's working wonderfully for me so far. I love the simplicity of the account setup and complete integration with Firefox's native bookmarks that does not add features that I don't need. I *really* hope the foxcloud server stays around and I would be happy to donate by paypal as the "donations" wiki page author also asked for. Thanks for Foxmarks! Scott
- Hi there. I'd like to say this is a great add to Firefox. Works without a glitch so far. Thanks very much. By the way may I ask why this extension is not listed at addons.mozilla.org? I've been searching for an add on like this for long. Bookmarks Synchronizer wouldn't work for me as I don't have FTP access, and I coulnd't make it work with a free web hosting. I would have found Foxmarks much earlier before messing with lots of extensions if it was on mozilla site. --some_anon-- 13:04, 9 February 2006 (EST)
- We hope to make Foxmarks available as a 1.0 release on the Mozilla site once Foxmarks & Foxcloud are both sufficiently stable. We're getting close, but a few bugs still remain to be worked out. Thanks for your support. --Todd 13:59, 9 February 2006 (EST)
- --Munk 13:50, 5 February 2006 (EST) What advantage is there to using DAV instead of FTP? I've tried both methods locally and in testing there seems to be neglibible speed increase for synch updates of a 1Mb bookmark file. Just curious what advantages DAV has over FTP and whether I should stick to using DAV given your efforts are focussed on it (according to the last changelog iirc). Thanks for a great extension btw!
- DAV provides support for etags, which Foxmarks uses eliminate downloads of an unchanged sync file. FTP doesn't support etags. --Todd 04:48, 7 February 2006 (EST)
- --Munk 13:50, 5 February 2006 (EST) Had some minor confusion connecting via FTP - I was using the absolute path to the synch file instead of relative path. The configuration dialog could make this clearer I think - it's not obvious that a relative path should be used, especially since the 'default' setting says '/home/<user>/' which makes the user think an absolute path is required. Could be resolved by changing the label for the 'path' form field in the Advanced Server Settings from just 'Path' to 'Relative path'.
- Thanks for the suggestion. We'll probably revamp the UI for setup at point in the medium future, and will add this to list of things that are potentially confusing in the current design. --Todd 04:48, 7 February 2006 (EST)
- Learnt about this extension from digg - really looks very good so far. Tried on WinXP and MacOSX. Only had minor problems with script-timeout (Firefox asked if I wanted to stop the script) and different namings (it seems) between German Firefox 1.5 on Win and same version on Mac (different naming of the "Toolbar Folder", same language version). I use Simpy a lot, but for the Toolbar-folder, I still have good old static bookmarks;-) Thanks for a great extension! — Gregor, 03 Feb 2006
- Foxmarks just blew away all the changes I had made today. Does it keep a backup of the previous version of the bookmarks? Sequence of events: 1) add and edit bookmarks while at work, at end of day, update from .5 to .51 2) at home open firefox, browse, update from .5 to .51 3) realize my home bookmarks are missing my new ones, hit control-shift-s 4) hmmm, still missing my new marks, so vpn&remote desktop to my work box, open firefox, hit control-shift-s 5) realize that my new bookmarks have been blown away, cry a single tear, and leave a note on the wiki. b0b0b0b@gmail.com
- It kinda messed up my bookmarks. I was hoping it would match folder for folder, but instead it looks like it just appends everything onto the existing bookmarks making a mess, and leaves a ton of seperators around.
- This was probably caused by a bug that we fixed in version .51. Sorry for the inconvenience. --Todd 05:02, 7 February 2006 (EST)
- Brilliant work - thanks. One thing: the https connection seems to work fine for me so far, but it would be nice to have the certificates configured properly to avoid the big warning messages about mismatched domains in Firefox. Andy.
- It'd be very nice to have a preference whether you'd always like to keep the ordering and conflicts as in the local or as in the remote version. In that way synching would really be automatic, instead of popping up a dialog every time.
- Gernot 19. Januar 2006 - This is one of the coolest extensions ever. Installation was easy on a Win XP machine. I will install on a Linux box later this evening. Thank you! Good work! Will the service remain free? How can I set up my own Cosmo based server? Gernot
- user theshovel - installation was a piece of cake. Pretty cool. Thanks. Jim
- Arteekay 20:11, 6 January 2006 (CST) - During the recent outage, I considered switching (temporarily) back to using my ftp, but I didn't want to lose my current configuration. It would be great if each server type had it's own user/pass/address/path so that a backup can be done easily. Possibly allowing for export of the configurations would also be great. Otherwise, I've been happy to dump bookmarks synchronizer and not look back. With Mr Tech's Local Install conflicting with it, I'd taken to adding toolbar buttons and trying to remember to manually force detection if I touched my bookmarks. I've lost far too many changes with BMS to even try to count.
- --Anthony522 11:47, 5 January 2006 (EST) Even after updating my extension, while I successfully created a new account I cannot get the system to work with my own FTP site that requires a username and password. I would rather use my own FTP because I'm not sure what you plan on doing with everyone's bookmarks. Is this feature working? Would I pass the username and password in typical fashion (username:password@ftp.site.com)? Any help would be appreciated.
- Creating a new account using the Setup Wizard creates an account on the Foxcloud server, irrelevant if you're planning to use your own FTP server. Foxmarks constructs a URL just as you've described above from the protocol, username, password, server name, and path fields that you can find in the Foxmarks Settings Dialog. Some configuration of these inputs fields should get you what you wanted, but as we've observed elsewhere, we can't provide much support for people using their own server as the complexity is too high. --Todd 12:43, 5 January 2006 (EST)
- fletch - Why doesn't foxmarks use XBEL for storage? There's already a lot of support for XBEL, and existing code to do things like automatically populate your PHP-based web site's "links" page with links from a XBEL file. -- 02 Jan 2006
- The literal answer to your question is that we didn't use XBEL because it was easier for our purposes to use Firefox's native RDF/XML format. That being said, if there's substantial end-user desire to have bookmarks available in other formats like XBEL, we'd certainly consider it. You could add something to Foxmarks: Suggestions for Improvements and see what kind of traction it gets there. --Todd 12:49, 5 January 2006 (EST)

I then tried christophera@alacritymanagement.com with the same error.I then cancelled, but now there is no signup box in the Foxcloud extensions options box, so I am unable to try further.
- There is a 32-character limit in email addresses that Foxmarks has inherited from its server. Your email address weighs in at 36 characters, thus the refusal. I'll file a bug report to try to get that limit increased (128 characters seems reasonably safe to me). As a temporary work-around, perhaps you could use an alternative email address from one of the free email providers.

- User TrueSatan...I hope you will consider porting this to Flock where it might sit rather better that in Firefox. Currently Flock uses del_icio_us as part of its standard behaviour and that service provides a function service to what you have in mind.
What's the point of using this if you can just use one of the del.icio.us bookmarks synchronisers to achieve the same result?
- User barnaclebarnes: All works OK for me. I would love it if you could also syncronise other FF data with this. It would be gngreat to be able to sync extensions between browsers. If I install an extension at work I would also like that extension on my home machine but I never remember all the extensions I have.
- Thanks for the support and suggestion. Several others have also suggested that syncing extensions (as well as additional items maintained in your Firefox profile, e.g., stored username/passwords), but we haven't had a chance to look into feasability yet. We'll post news here on the Wiki as new features are rolled out. --Todd 16:01, 19 December 2005 (EST)
- User amarok: All I can say is a BIG ThankU! This is the extension I'd been waiting for eversince FF was released. Works perfectly. No need to play with that darn delicious bulls***.
- Glad to hear that we're meeting a need.
- To be clear about del.icio.us, as other folks have commented on it: we think del.icio.us is great; we use it, too. But we don't think del.icio.us provides a complete replacement for in-browser bookmarks, and we think that claims of browser bookmark's imminent demise have been greatly exaggerated. --Todd 16:01, 19 December 2005 (EST)
Hi guys. Thanks for a very interesting extension. Like the site logo. Very cool. On Firefox 1.5 I had a flawless install of Foxmarks. I just downloaded it to my usb memory stick and dropped it onto a running Firefox window and it installed ok. Restarted Firefox and the Wizard ran fine and when I use another machine I will see if this extension does what it says on the tin. There is a facility at Netvibes (http://www.netvibes.com/) to save firefox bookmarks online and it works - bit it requires JavaScript to be turned on to work. This is ok on my own machine but I cannot do so on the office pc as the system administrator has locked down the computer. I have an extension on Firefox called No Script which allows me to block JavaScript on a per session basis and so enable it on Netvibes to access my bookmarks. (user: JavaScript) 20.10.05.
- User Greg: installed on two Mac OS X machines. Changes synched to the server immediately. Excellent. But when I switch machines, even a quit & restart of Firefox doesn't sync -from- the server, as one would expect. Had to sync explicitly from the Foxmarks... menu. It seems that once one bothers to combine, install, and register two machines, it should fetch automatically, at some point, by default. (Maybe on restart; maybe when the browser is next used; maybe when it's idle for a minute ... ) Until then, it's probably good to tell users that this doesn't happen on-the-fly. Still -- wonderful job!
- Greg, thanks for your comments. Because we didn't explain it better, you've misunderstood how automatic synchronization works. I've added a description at the bottom of the Foxmarks: Frequently Asked Questions page. I hope this makes things more clear. --Todd 13:40, 23 December 2005 (EST)
- Brian: I am using Firefox 1.5 on the Mac, and each time I try to install I get the error message: "Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer 0.39 could not be installed because it is not compatible with Firefox 1.5. (Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer 0.39 will only work with Firefox versions from 1.5 to 1.6)". I downloaded Firefox again, and reinstalled just to make sure I had the very latest, but I still get the error.
- User Cris: I am using Firefox 1.5 on Mac OS 10.4.3, and when I click your download link http://www.foxcloud.com/foxmarks/getlatest.php?file=foxmarks.*xpi I get the "Software Installation is currently disabled" bar - click Edit options. Yet, on doing that, I get the Content tab, where there is no "Allow..." as indicated by your instructions. I do have Javascript enabled, etc. Hints? Thanks!
- Cris: Please review the information here to learn how to re-enable software installation on Firefox 1.5. --Todd 20:30, 5 January 2006 (EST)
- John: I just tried to download the extension, but Firefox gave me a "could not install" because of "download failure" or something of the like. Subsequent attempts to download have been met with no actions taking place.
- Just what I needed, i hated having to search for something at home, I knew I had saved at work. It did take some cleaning up after the first big merge. But after that all is great. THANKS.
- Scott: Great stuff. It would be even better if you could save the bookmark icons along with the bookmarks.
- ChristopherA 12:26, 25 February 2006 (EST): I am still unable to use foxmarks extension (just downloaded the latest today). I can view bookmarks that uploaded a long time ago at my.foxcloud.com, but whenever I try to sync account ChristopherA, I just get a "Status: Searching for sync file..." dialogue forever. I am using Firefox 1.5.0.1 and Foxmarks .55 on Windows XP SP2, but the same problem happens when I use 1.5.0.1 and a previous version of Foxmarks on OSX 1.4. One suggestion -- could you clear my previously uploaded bookmarks, and make my account ChristopherA start from scratch? Maybe there is some bad data on the upload from a much earlier beta version that is causing this lockup.
- I use Firefox on my Windows and Linux boxes, but on Mac I much prefer Camino. Are there any plans for a Foxmarks plugin for Camino? It would be really nice to be able to sync my bookmarks between all three of my machines. --danbee 213.152.54.41 05:05, 9 March 2006 (EST)
- Very cool extension. I've made a Netvibes (http://www.netvibes.com/) plugin to display the foxmarks bookmarks directly in netvibes. Just use http://<login>:<password>@sync.foxcloud.com/home/<login>/foxmarks.xml as url. --redbug 03:12, 10 March 2006 (EST)
- Where is this plugin?, I can't seem to find it.
- Nice, here's hoping foxy can cope with merging 2 different sets of bookmarks.
- hmmm, not too good:
- installed foxmarks at work, sync'd work bookmarks to server fine
- installed foxmarks at home (different bookmarks) sync'd and combined
- went back to work, foxmarks only loaded the bookmarks on my toolbar folder
- (the only ones the same on both computers).
- Foxmarks file on server included all home & work bookmarks
- reinstalled foxmarks at work, went through the wizard again & it overwrote the
- large server bookmarks file with the small work one

- I had trouble trying to install. I have 1.5.0.1 working fine. I got the software installation prohibited message, then I chose Edit Options and added www.foxcloud.com to the list of sites allowed to install extensions. Then reloaded, still got same error bar. Closed, reopened Firefox, same deal. Unclicked the "warn ... install" button entirely, "OK." Again clicked on the install link, again same error. - It would be great if I can define some exceptions on specific bookmarks (folders). Because although most of my bookmarks at home and at work are common, some of them are relevant for work only. It is most annoying when I have my most favorite bookmarks on my 'Bookmarks Toolbar Folder' at work, and they take a lot of place at home and I don't even need them.
- BUG REPORT: Installed on two OS X 1.5.0.2 installs without any trouble. Merged beautifully. Then installed on Fedora Core 5 (also 1.5.0.2) and merge does not produce the same Bookmark Toolbar. Apparently FC5 calls the toolbar "Personal Toolbar Folder" while OS X calls it "Bookmarks Toolbar Folder" so all the bookmarks show up, they just don't show up MERGED on the toolbar like I wanted for all machines. Admittedly, if Mozilla is using different naming conventions across operating systems, then it's their fault and not Foxmarks' fault, but nonetheless the behavior produced is not what a Foxmarks user would want. If anyone can think of a work-around to fix this, I'd appreciate it. 128.32.23.4 19:56, 29 April 2006 (EDT)
- Did you know that you can designate any folder you want to be the bookmark toolbar folder? In the Bookmark Manager view (Bookmarks -> Manage Bookmarks...) select a folder and then Edit -> Set As Toolbar Folder. Foxmarks should (but doesn't) pay special attention to the Bookmark Toolbar Folder when performing the merge, but in the meantime, you should be able to use Set As Toolbar Folder to get past your problem. --Todd 20:08, 29 April 2006 (EDT)
- I am very, very confused. Initially I assumed that I'd need one synchronisation account for multiple PCs. The setup was successful on the first PC (Windows XP), although very slow, but on the second PC (Windows 98SE), after I said I had an existing account, the setup wizard spent an hour and a half searching for a non-existent sync file - so I ended up having to terminate the wizard. I then thought that perhaps I'm meant to create a new account on every machine I want to synchronize, and that the accounts would be then synchronized by the server(?). So I created a new account on the second PC, and now I can't see how I'm supposed to synchronize the two accounts. Please explain exactly how to use this extension. Cheers. --Steph 20:19, 30 May, 2006 (GMT)
- Your initial assumption is correct -- you need only one synchronization account. The fact that setup was very slow for the first account and then took > 90 minutes for the second account suggests that you have network problems. Contact us via email if you need specific guidance. --Todd 17:50, 30 May 2006 (EDT)
I second Steph's concerns. I too get endless 'searching for sync file' from almost any computer I use, almost anywhere. I originally accepted Todd's view, but I've become more sceptical. If 'searching for sync file' is caused by network problems, then a lot of networks have got this problem. - Matthew Pollock.
- Very nice extension. In fact, it's the most useful one I have yet, Great job! The other night I lost all of my bookmarks, though I was able to restore them from the backup. I beleive that was my machines fault though. One thing that I was wondering is if it works on the linux version of Firefox. I have been thinking about switching over to Ubuntu and want to make sure I won't miss anything. -- Sir_Lewk
- Thanks for your comments. In general, Foxmarks runs anywhere that Firefox runs. People are running it on various flavors of Linux, including Ubuntu, so you should be okay. --Todd 10:58, 4 June 2006 (EDT)
- I am running it on Fedora Core 5, so it should run on Ubuntu too. -- Otto 11:39, 10 June 2006
- Foxmarks Installation SLOWS Firefox Performance Significantly **
GREAT TOOL! LOVE IT! BUT....Since I have installed Foxmarks my Firefox (v 1.5.0.4 on a Windows XP Pro machine and Windows XP Home) performance is awful, very, very slow. I also receive non-responsive script error pop-up boxes every few minutes. I've had to uninstall Foxmarks because i couldn't stand the lag anymore, I hate to admit it, but everything is running better now. 164.82.144.3 14:04, 12 June 2006 (EDT)bryan164.82.144.3 14:04, 12 June 2006 (EDT)

Great extension. Thank you very much for the work.
- Always have problems when I add bookmarks to the "tool bar folder". Always. When I go to my next machine it will maybe have 2 of the same bookmark on there, and then when you press one of them the duplicate gets deleted and the existent one goes blank (in terms of name and web address). Always have this problem if i add stuff to the tool bar folder, but not to any of the other bookmarks. it can be quite frustrating. eventually if you keep correcting it, it fixes but it happens every time. --68.210.137.247 16:20, 5 July 2006 (EDT)
- Support for Firefox 2 ??
I cannot live without this extension... In firefox 2 there is Possible to add keywords. That is microsummery. Anything to do with Foxmark??
The extension generally works great. I did have a problem once -- it seemed to delete all my bookmarks rather than update them. I see your note about restoring from backup on your machine. However, this may be a useful option in the extension. Restore backup could either restore from your machine, or it could restore a previous version of the bookmarks from the server.
- Great extension, though it kinda s*cks that I'm losing all my favicons after every sync. I looked through the xml-file on the sync-server and it seems like you're not storing the icon from the bookmarks-file. It would be cool if you could store the icon with the rest of the data in the xml-file in a future version. Apart from that your extension works great. stefan 194.37.2.7 05:57, 3 August 2006 (EDT)

- I just downloaded this over the weekend. I synced my work bookmarks to home just fine. Now that I'm back at work all it did was DOUBLE every bookmark--now I am wasting time deleting all the duplicates. NOT at all helpful. - I love the product guys, I have been looking for something like this for yrs. The one issue I have found is with deleting bookmarks. I use foxmarks to keep my desktop and laptop in sync. So now what happens when I delete a book mark from one and then I go to the second machine and sync it puts the book mark back. So i was thinking there needs to be like a master machine setting. Meaning if i want my desktop to be the master machine, when book marks are deleted using that machine they are deleted on the second machine, or 3rd, 4th however many. So that when the other machines are re-synced they do not put back the book marks you have just deleted. Make sense?? i hope so..if not let me know and i will try to make it clearer. Other than that great job!!! Keep up the good work!!
- Great! I already had Google Browser Sync, but that lacks the ability to view your bookmarks from anywhere! I only miss some sort of search function. And I'd rather see them in a start-page layout in stead of the default bookmark layout. Keep it up! -- Walter from Belgium
Sigh, seems I lost my bookmark collection now, thanks to Foxmark. It uploaded the few default bookmarks from my other computer (where I had just installed firefox and foxmarks), instead of downloading all of my bookmarks from the server to the other computer. :(
If I remember correctly I specified on the other computer to 'download bookmarks from server and discard local ones', but there might have been some browser crash or such, and apparently the automatic syncronization went ahead and silently replaced all of my bookmarks on the server when firefox was restarted. :(
I'd very much appreciate versioning support for foxmark (storing the bookmark files in subversion should not increase their size very much) - or even just one bi-weekly or so rotating backup for each user, that could allow recovering from these kind of unfortunate losses.
As it is now, I'll have to look into some kind of local regular subversion backup of the bookmarks on my main machine - it's just going to be a pain to set up and configure. And that is, assuming that I find any backup of my bookmarks (I had one, but it was on a laptop that had a harddrive crash recently). I'll now retire to work through my sorrow and loss.. :~(
UPDATE: Fortunately, Firefox itself already includes something like this: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Lost_bookmarks So I was able to recover my bookmarks :)
Still, a versioning supporting backend could be an interesting feature to ponder anyway for Foxmarks.
Was able to install and upload on one machine with Firefox 2. when I try to download on another with same, it starts to sync and hangs for up to 2-3 hours.. I have tried download and sync with same result.I can log in and see my bookmarks are on site.. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Foxmarks. same error ````Ed
I like it. It's simple and just works. But it's too simple so I have two suggestions:
Syncing "file:///" urls isn't doing me any good and they aren't necessarily cross platform. My Mac doesn't have a C: folder, so even if I wanted to, I couldn't create parallel local documents. Stop doing that or make it optional.
I would like to have bookmarks organized into named groups. For example, I could set up 3 groups for me: Global, WorkInternal, and Personal. I could then set up machine with what groups to pull down/keep synced. I don't want my personal bookmarks at work, likewise I don't want machine local or internal work links at home. But I do want to share my external links that I use at work and at home.
Foxmarks saved me!
This happened 20 Minutes ago.
I restarted my computer. After logging in, i double cliked on Firefox (2.0).
BOOM! I saw pop-ups everywhere... I began to worry... Then i noticed that My Firefox window is different. Its like its Fresh, never been used. Like i just installed it just now. (read the rest of this entry on my blog migs.wordpress.com)

I like foxmarks, but I have a lot of bookmarks and I hesitate whenever I want to add or change them. I wish that there was some way to clone the bookmark list and start a thread for the synchronization and allow firefox to continue browsing while foxmarks does its work. I know that's tricky, but I'm gettin' gray hair here. (smile)

- Try Foxmarks 0.87. --Todd 23:30, 5 December 2006 (EST)
FoxMarks is awesome!!! I have one issue though. when i import favorites from IE all of them get imported. I can copy all of them into the root folder of favorites; this isnt difficult. But the biggest pain is managing duplicates. i am not a techie so i dont know, but matching two strings to see if they are the same isnt probably that difficult. Why cant we do this to eliminate duplicate URLs in my foxmarks.
Setup Wizard Suggestion
Please change the Setup Wizard defaults for people that have already created an account, since it is more likely that a user will want to restore bookmarks than create a new account.
- I'm intrigued--how would you suggest implementing this? An issue to consider is that most installations where an account already exists are for people who've just installed on one computer, and are installing it on their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th computers, where synchronizing is what they're interested in doing. --Foxworth 18:08, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
- I'm with you on this one, Foxworth. --quatermass 20:18, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry, I just set up foxmarks on new portable firefox (visiting a friend using vista) and after installation and restart, it just syncronized my 6 mos of organized bookmarks to the INSTALLED BASIC bookmarks. I was never asked and never got a chance to say import/export/sync?! Yep, just sweating bullets praying that my roommate at home DOESN'T use my PC. It's got the current GOOD Sync of foxmarks. I just remembered..I had used my laptop this week too. I'm hopefully saved!
- I think you're likely okay; version 1 stores bookmarks in a different place from version 2. What likely happened is the new computer synchronized its own bookmarks to the version 2 set, and your version 1 set is still fine. --Foxworth 19:38, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

Setup wizard doesn't like my email address
The setup wizard doesn't seem to accept an email address containing a '+' character. RFC 2822 expressly permits use of that character in email addresses, so perhaps this should be fixed. Luckily, the online account creator works fine.
Darthmarth37 05:57, 10 December 2007 (UTC)
- Even better, the Setup Wizard in Foxmarks 2 doesn't require your email address at all -- all account creation is handled by the web. --Todd 04:25, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Remove icon in status bar?
I loved the way the foxmarks used to just work in the background. The latest version has a very distracting animated icon in the status bar. Is it possible to have that icon hidden by default? Thanks!
- Not by default, but you can right-click on the icon and unselect the "Show Status Icon" item to get it to disappear. You can then access the various menus via Tools > Foxmarks as necessary. --Foxworth 19:33, 24 December 2007 (UTC)
Update the My Foxmarks site with keyword field
The my.foxmarks.com site is missing the keyword field for bookmarks - it should have it so we can edit the bookmarks completely thru that remote interface. Thanks! 04 January 2008
Dead link checking
It would be really useful to have the ability to check the dead links within bookmarks!
- This is somewhat outside the purview of a synchronizer, and there are already fine add-ons that accomplish this outside of Foxmarks--check the Mozilla add-ons site for some good ones! --Foxworth 22:49, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

Seamonkey
This plugin really is great. Having the same list of bookmarks on every machine I work on, without the nuisance of having to manually copy them every time is something I'd been looking for a long time. I agree with some of the others in this wiki, that there should be a version for Seamonkey, though. Seamonkey is a great internet tool package for people who aren't as experienced with computers as some of us, as well as being a pretty light one. The only reason that keeps me from using it, is the limited number of plug-ins that work on it. Of those that don't, Foxmarks is without a doubt the most compelling one. Aside from that, I have no complaints what so ever about Foxmarks, it's superb.
Feature request: add bookmarks via email (someday: iPhone sync)
Problem: you're using your iPhone, navigate to some page, but you want to view that page on a real computer. With iPhone you can't synchronize bookmarks (someday), what to do?
[Proposed] interim partial solution (note: not actually implemented): send email to add+username@foxmarks.com containing one or more hyperlinks. These links get added to your bookmarks automatically (perhaps in a specially designated folder)
Better solution (someday): iPhone version of foxmarks plugin
Foxmarks disables a Firefox Software Security Device safeguard
Problem: When using Foxmarks, your login to the Software Security Device (SSD) never times out. This poses a significant security risk by disabling Firefox's automatic login timeout.
Probable cause of problem: Foxmarks keeps you continually logged into the SSD by querying it every 15 minutes or so. This is most likely due to automatic synchronization querying the SSD at every synchronization rather than remembering the password for the entire firefox session.
Workaround: Disable Automatic Synchronization in Foxmarks and try to remember to manually sync once in a while.
[Proposed] Solution: Query the Firefox Software Security Device for the password only once per Firefox session. Once retrieved, store the result in a variable in memory.
- Actually, Foxmarks only queries for the password once per session--after that, a Foxmarks cookie provides all the required authentication. So it seems to me we already have the proposed solution, no? --Foxworth 17:58, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
Songbird
Be nice to see Songbird support now that its at version 0.6. Even though its just me, I use it almost as much as Firefox and I'm sure there are others out there too.
Feature Request: Multiple Bookmark List
A set of bookmarks for one particular browser (ex. Songbird) and another set of bookmarks for another browser or just a seperate set (ex. Main set). Having the capability to choose which set to use at setup or login.
Feature request: disable or change shortcuts
Please make it possible to disable or change foxmarks shortcuts! They conflict with different development extensions like webdeveloper, which is very popular. An option to disable the shortcuts completely would be great, because I for myself do not find them helpful for this extension (it works automatically in the background anyway). Thanks, Fabian
- This feature is avaible in our most recent release. See our FAQ for details. --Foxworth 00:09, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
Feature request: ask for password even before it's needed
I know that sounds crazy, but let me explain my reasoning. I tend to restart Firefox annoyingly often (because an addon upgraded, or it crashed, or whatever), and what always happens is: I restart it, start reading some web site or watching a video ... and then five minutes later I get the popup from Firefox' Master Password thingy asking me to enter my password. I realize that Foxmarks needs my password to sync my bookmarks ... but I wish I'd get asked as soon as I restart the browser, not five minutes later when I'm busy reading.
Feature request: option to use port 80 or 443 for synchronization (solved)
Since some days on my work we have a new firewall and most ports are blocked. Now I can't synchronize my bookmarks. My administrator said, he is not allowed to change the firewall settings.
The synchronization should be run with port 80 (http) or SSL/https (443). Maybe also other people has this problem. This option could help. The server could run on a subdomain like sync433.foxmarks.com
By the way - thanks for the great extention - my most favorite!! --Beauty
- Actually, Foxmarks runs only on ports 80 and 443, so I'm not sure what would be happening here, unless there's some other firewall limitation that's causing the problem.
