Foxmarks: Suggestions for Improvements

Synchronization Options
* Plugin version for Flocks
- Hi, could you create a version of your awesome and great plugin for Flocks? Flocks is using Mozilla/Gecko, though they have some changes, example, their Bookmarks/Favorites is a little different than FF2. The plugin installs fine, it is the synch'ing and downloading of the bookmarks that doesn't.
- Here's the website -> http://extensions.flock.com/extensions 222.127.223.69 01:01, 30 June 2007 (EDT)
* Have an Internet Explorer Toolbar too.
- Could you make a IE Toolbar or Similar thing for IE so that users from those two browsers can use it because I'm using Mozilla Firefox and sometimes I use IE...
- Seamonkey plug-in please......
And Safari support...please? :-) Perhaps consider a konqueror service menu add-on as well :^)
* Adding bookmarks using my.foxmarks.com
- Is there any chance to enable adding bookmarks directly from my.foxmarks.com? This would be great for users that are temporarily using somebody else's PC... --Bojan
* Setting the automatic synchronization interval.
- When Foxmarks synchs firefox stops responding to input. Having this happen once a minute was driving me mad, so I disabled the automatic synch. This of course has had the effect that I've already forgotten to synch a few times. Please, more settings for synch! On start/stop + configurable interval seems about right to me.
- Alternatively a toolbar button to toggle auto synch on/off would be useful. --Munk 16:11, 10 March 2006 (EST)
- How 'bout just making sync less obtrusive? --Todd 14:49, 15 March 2006 (EST)
- Since I'm often updating 5-10 bookmarks in a row, and have to deal with the sync process stalling things several times while doing this, I'd certainly like to toggle it on and off. A Sync button on my toolbar'd be nice, too. --Shanoah
- This feature would be very, very good to have. I agree with the above, that it is often not needed to do a synchronisation every minute, especially if you do some work on the bookmarks.
- Another vote in favor of being able to change the sync interval.
- I'll add my vote for this. To me, it's the highest priority change, and from what I've read it should be relatively easy to implement as it's already stubbed in. See this for a very good proposal for synchronization interval enhancements
- Have a button into the toolbar for a manual synchro (<-- This is possible as far as I know, just push CTRL+SHIFT+S in Firefox and you'll see Foxmarks wake up in your tool tray at the bottom of your browser and sync. I've been doing that for months! Found that feature accidentally.)
- Added 21.mar.2007: Well no as the CTRL+SHIFT+S has a conflict with the Firefox Screenshot Grabber, which kicks in. For conflicts avoidance propose a status or regular toolbar button to invoke synchronisation or an optiion in the Foxmarks preferences scrren to put it on statusbar.... green synched, red not synched, animated when in progress.
- Have a scheduler option synchro to configure the elaps time to synchro (eg. Each hour). This because with a big bookmark firefox freeze more 30sec to update foxmark.
- Have foxmarks ignore bookmarks with "file://" URLs, as these are local to the machine
- "One-Way" Synchronization: It would be nice if Foxmarks had the option to update just the My Foxcloud repository of bookmarks, but not update the local computer's bookmarks. So, say I add a bookmark at work that I don't want downloaded to my home PC: automatically upload it to My Foxcloud. Same thing at home: add a bookmark, automatically upload it to My Foxcloud. Then if, for example, I'm at a friend's house and I forget a bookmark I added while at work, I can browse to My Foxcloud and retrieve it. Sort of like a centralized "dump" for bookmarks.--Burma 19:56, 5 June 2006 (EDT)
- Partial Synchronization I would like to be able to mark groups of bookmarks with a label (like "home", "work", "del.icio.us", "my current project") and then define the set of bookmarks that I want to sync from th Foxcloud repository for a specific computer. SEdiger
- YES! For me, this is a critical improvement. Thanks Foxmarks!
- Add my vote to this one - otherwise an excellent tool
- This is the only thing stopping me from using foxmarks right now.
- Also see "Specify Folders" below.
- Please - It really needed to make subgroups for synchronisation "home" and "work". Thanks in advance!
- I need this too. My employer won't be happy if I store my bookmarks to their internal sites with you.
- Big vote for this too, I would like to sync the bookmark toolbar for all our employees so they are the same, but still want them to be able to keep their own stuff separate.
- One more user that wants to sync work and home, but doesn't want the work bookmarks. I don't need all the stuff on how to service a Symbol PDA. --Starhawk55 12:38, 21 July 2007 (EDT)
- Please make the default server type 'HTTPS' instead of 'HTTP'. Ktheory 12:02, 8 April 2006 (EDT)
- Please add sftp support 208.64.243.79 20:25, 5 December 2006 (EST)
- It would be great to sync the ICON field (added by Favicon-Picker) too.
- For me, the extension is of NO USE without the Icons synchronized. It loses all the icons. I have many bookmarks without text, because I reconize the icons. I'm glad I made a backup before trying this extension.
- Yes, please. I don't think it's as critical as the above comment, but while non-critical, it would significantly enhance useability, since ones bookmarks would then *look* consistent across machines.
- I'd really like to see an option to synchronize only on changes in the bookmark folder. This way I won't be bothered with the security password dialog every time I open the browser, yet I'll never forget to upload a new bookmark when I add one.
- I'll second this!
- I'll third this! The security dialog is really obnoxious and interferes with my web experience. An option to remember the password would be nice in addition to the above.
- Please split the .xml file into multiple ones.
I have about 1.700 bookmarks which results in a ~500K bookmarks.xml file. There is only a very small subset of high-frequently changing entries (i.e. Sage RSS feeds). Down-/Uploading of the whole foxmarks.xml file just takes its time, while only a small subset of data is really changed.
Splitting the file at some borders (i.e. on a size- or a folder-border) could speed up the whole synchronization process a lot. I know you are working on support of multiple formats, perhaps this issue could be dealt with within this part of work. --Thanks for your work, Mario.
- I'll second this sugestion, since I have well over 4,000 bookmarks.--Lmyers 03:26, 27 September 2006 (EDT)
- I'd like to see this myself, as I have one folder of constantly changing bookmarks... --Shanoah
- Take a look at the *nix utility "rsync" -- it has the capability of syncing large files without transmitting the whole thing every time. It uses a sophisticated "chunking" algorithm that, IIRC, was the subject of a thesis.
- Why sync using the whole XML file? If you are really uploading/downloading the whole xml file with every sync, this seems overkill, especially with long lists of bookmarks. And lets face it, the people who most want to use this extension WILL have lots of bookmarks.
How about only uploading/downloading a delta file for syncing, describing only which items have changed and how they have changed (add/delete/new location in tree). If the machines are in sync, you should be able to rebuild the new state from this? Or use a method like this up to the point where it no longer makes sense (3 - 5 changes?)
- Sync only only on startup and exit options like Bookmark Synchronizer.
- I'd love to have a Foxmarks Plugin for IE. I use both IE and firefox both at home and work. Therefore, I have to deal with a different list of favorites on each of the four browser installations. I've don't use yahoo bookmarks or any other web-based bookmark service, since logging to these and updating links kind of breaks the flow in my browsing session. Foxmarks helps me keep my firefox favorites synched up between my home and office firefox browsers. Would have loved, if IE can also be synced in... --Plato 11:44, 2 March 2007 (EST)
- +1 at least downloading (Sometimes, I use IE for testing purposes.) --Gmuer 06:09, 19 March 2007 (EDT)
- I agree. Some websites have problems with Firefox so I have to switch to IE or use IE at work due to work policies. Having the bookmarks sync'd across IE and Firefox would be great. TW 21, Mar 2007
- How about syncing on 'N' minutes of inactivity? Maybe you could sense when a screen saver kicks in and do a sync then? --TimG
- On a secured Firefox with the master password active Foxmarks will repeatedly keep asking for the password every 20 minutes or so until the correct one is given. Is it possible for Foxmarks to temporarily disable synchronisation for the session if no password is given? e.g. I hit cancel at the password prompt (which I do a lot). The constant nagging gets to be pretty annoying when you know you havnt made any bookmark changes recently. Why does foxmarks need the password to check for changes anyway? isnt the password only needed for uploads?
- No, Foxmarks needs your password to access your server account to see if there are changes that have been uploaded from another machine. --Todd 03:31, 14 March 2006 (EST)
- I meant isn't it possible to code a check without needing a password nor exposing every users bookmarks to the world by sending something like a http request to foxmarks that'll return the users last_modified date in the header. -- Richard 11:25 15 March 2006
- With a different server architecture, yes. With our current architecture, no. But the right solution to this problem really revolves around access to your Foxmarks password. --Todd 14:49, 15 March 2006 (EST)
- How about a way to sync via a gmail account instead of your server?
- Have an option to have a deleted.xml file on the server where any bookmarks that are removed are automatically inserted into there just in case --JonathanE (not reged)
- How about automagically syncing del.icio.us bookmarks and the foxmarks ones ? For saving/loading there is Export/Import feature, and there could be a problem which the tag system versus the directories system, but nothing that couldn't be handled. I think it would unite the 2 communities far beyond their differences. -- snide 21:35, 30 April 2006 (CET)
- I think it would be nice to be able to sync to Yahoo or Google. I'm a user of a tablet PC and stuck to use IE as FireFox does not allow me to use the full features of the tablet. So I have to use my G-mail bar for my bookmarks.
- Two things. First, I think that automatic sychronization should be suspended when working in the bookmark manager. When I'm in the manager, I'm usually, well, managing (moving, deleting, separating and arranging) bookmarks. Therefore, each synch seems to take a longer time plus it interfers with my operations in the manager. Sometime the sync routine will cause a highlight and move to not go where it is supposed to go. Also, it tends to freeze me up right in the middle of typing in the name of new folders. I realize that I can disable automatic synchronizing but that is more steps and more than likely I'd just get on with other things and forget to reenable sychronizing when I'm done. Second, and I can't see this being a lot of work but perhaps it is. It would be helpful if I could specify how often the program would synchronize. I definitely do not need it to do this every minute. For me once an hour or even once a day might be adequate. Also, if the timing was regulated by the user then at times when I'm doing a lot of research and saving a lot of bookmarks, I could set the synch for, say, every 20 minutes but at times when I'm mostly working on other stuff and just looking at a page or two on the web, I could set it for something like every 4 hours or 18 hours or whatever. Great extension but needs a little tweaking. Even milliseconds of freezing, while trying to do something else, can be frustrating and usually it is a lot more than milliseconds...the UI freezes tend to be more like two or three second or more. Perhaps in tandem with other extensions (non-bookmark related) the time increases. JRLB 11/07/2006
- Just a note: it would be nice to be able to set just how the syncing works...that is, so it automatically and by ctrl+shift+s uploads or downloads, instead of just syncing...thanks, love the extension! ---Theborg3of5
- It would be nice to have option for automatic sync on firs start of firefox after each windows startup. Juga
- I am missing a feature that highlights recently added bookmarks. We are using foxmarks with three people, so it would be nice to be adviced when someone adds a bookmark. Otherwise sometimes it is hard to find out which ones are new or you don't even notice that there are new bookmarks. Thanks! Crowcounter
- It would be nice to do automatic sync after manual change of bookmark properties through right-click / Properties and not only after bookmark addition / deletion.
- It would be nice if you also have the option of keeping the theme and add-ons the same across browsers. I use multiple computers that I have foxmarks on to keep my bookmarks in sync. But everytime I find a new add-on or theme that I like I have to go through and install it on every one. Or if I end up not liking it delete it. ---Abnormal
- I STRONGLY CONCUR with Abnormal. I love Foxmarks and it is sometimes the only extension I add and certainly the first. I am moving around and configuring new machines frequently. It would be a godsend if Foxmarks could also load my extensions and settings. Think about last time you sat down on a friends machine and loaded Firefox for your own use because they don't know any better. It takes a while to find and load my prefered add-ons. It sucks to need one you didn't install. Wouldn't it be great if Foxmarks could do it in one step? -jeanpaulsc
- I only have 2 add-ons: foxmarks and fireftp. I thought many features that maybe can be added to foxmark; I read some here. Well, I didn't found this one: what if bookmarks will be handled depending the firefox user? let me explain: adding an option where you choose between, (1)create an account, sync bookmarks, and leaving them locally permanently (like it is now) or (2)create an account, sync bookmarks, remove them after closing firefox and recreating them depending the foxmarks-user that start firefox at that time. This creates the bookmarks-ambient comfortable to the firefox user at that moment. Also makes the foxmark more portable, private and secure. This free-up the use of the private bookmarks in non-private own computers such as public, partners and workplace. - Zage
- Detect an Internet Connection Before Syncing - I would like to see FoxMarks check for an internet connection before attempting to sync. I tend to leave Firefox open at pages of temporary interest to me, but if I'm not connected to the internet, Foxmarks keeps popping up with some "sync file disappeared. Upload current bookmarks?" error every five minutes. Obviously, that's paraphrase. Thanks for the great extension -- Dean
Specify folders
- I would like to see the ability to synchronize select folders, not everything by default.
- I currently don't sync my work PC with my 2 home PCs because there are some folders that contain links that I don't want seen at work. I would like to be able to tell my work PC to sync all folders except specific ones.
- We should be able to setup the bookmarks parent folder for synch, this would allow to have both "global" (synchronized) and "local" bookmarks
- It'd be very nice to synchronize only a bookmarks subtree.
- The Foxmarks model is based on precise synchronization, so this is a bit more complicated than it might seem. We're really trying to keep this simple. We do hear you, though -- not all bookmarks are ones that you want to synchronize. --Todd 14:49, 15 March 2006 (EST)
- Is there a way to tell Foxmarks which folders you'd want to keep synched? My bookmarks toolbar folders are different between by work and home FF, and I'd like to keep it that way.
- I'd like to second this, by default I want to share all folders across all PCs, but it might be nice NOT to have a couple of my fodlers appearing at work. I guess the simplest mechanism to achieve this would be to "mark" folders as private (e.g. for that machine only) and to ignore them in the sync calls. Seperated Boomark toolbars would also be good, although in my situation there are just two folders within my bookmark toolbar which I could mark "private" using the previous option to achieve my desired effect. --ben
- I successfully set this up - just create two distinct folders, and set one of them as the bookmarks toolbar folder (using the bookmark manager, "edit" menu) on each PC. So far, Foxmarks doesn't seem to sync the is-personal-toolbar-flag. --jens
- Does this really work? It seems unlikely to me that it would. --Todd 14:49, 15 March 2006 (EST)
- Todd, it really does not work flawlessly. Sometimes, Foxmarks decides to sync the is-personal-toolbar-flag, so the second PC switches to the first PC's toolbar folder (most of the time it works though, no idea when exactly). I do want a full sync, though - could you probably just add a checkbox along the lines of "do not change which folder serves as personal toolbar" which prevents Foxmarks from altering that flag on any folder? --jens
- I'd like to third this suggestion. :) The AbstractMouse.com extension does a good job of integrating this with the Bookmarks UI to allow users to pick which folders to sync (although I'd prefer syncing to be the default rather than their don't-sync as default). Unfortunately AbstractMouse doesn't allow syncing with my local server, so until Foxmarks adds this option I'm "stuck" with AbstractMouse.
- I'll fourth this suggestion!
- Fifthed!
- Please, when will we see this functionality? I want to use FoxMarks, but can't afford to have full sync. I was using AbstractMouse, but the server finally died after being abandoned for months. Tood's statement ("We do hear you, though") is almost one year old.
- I nth this suggestion, this would be very useful especially for the bookmarks toolbar, where I have a lot of local intranet sites bookmarked at work which I would not like to see at home. If Foxmarks could be configured to ignore certain folders it would be great. If you could take this to the level of ignoring individual bookmarks it would be even better. Jon S.
- I've just come across this extension and have tried others in the past but gave up on them due to the fact I couldn't specify specific folders to sync like a few others on here by the looks I'm using it mainly from a work machine bookmarking things I want to keep hold of and keep at home instead of sending myself emails with links! Would really like to see this feature developed im sure it would be warmly welcomed :), apart from that v nice lookin extension, keep it up
- I was thinking that this may be possible if we were allowed to delete certain folders without deleting them in Foxmarks. For example, if I have a folder named "Bookmarks Toolbar Folder (Home)" and another named "Bookmarks Toolbar Folder (Work)" I would not want the Home version at Work. So, if I downloaded the whole bookmark file from Foxmarks and deleted the Home folder, could Foxmarks ignore that deletion rather than erasing it? Foxmarks would then hold a complete set for Work and Home. -- Chris S
- On another note, a download interface would be nice, where you can select which folders you want to have downloaded. For example, the manager would show a list of all the folders and bookmarks, with checkboxes next to them. If you select, say, 20 out of 30 bookmarks/folders, Foxmarks would then create a unique file for bookmarks.html that would include only those bookmarks/files. -- Chris S
- I'll second this one Chris! Outstanding suggestion! Regards, Rich
- Allow other Synchronization options such as requiring a user confirmation before deleting files on either the local or the remote (two different options). If the user confirmation is not workable, then at least provide options to not delete bookmarks during synchronization. With the pain that the automatic synch creates I sometimes have added bookmarks in both the local and the remote since doing a synchronization. The way that Foxmarks syncs right now I have a choice which one I want it to delete. For most of us deleting bookmarks is not done nearly as often as adding. Therefore I would rather have to delete something manually (even a second time if necessary) rather than loosing bookmarks during the sync process that I really want to keep.
- Yes, I am looking forward to the time when I can create a profile to sync to (work, home, etc). --Mike S
- I agree! Is there any feeback on when this feature might be coming available?
- Please switch to using https and please store and transmit accounts and passwords as hashes. I just set up a new box with Foxmarks and set Wireshark to start capturing packets before syncing my bookmarks. I noticed that the password and account information is sent in plaintext. Anyone sniffing a network for traffic to 69.80.213.133 could gather this information to be used later. Great product, just completely insecure. -- Jon B
- As Jon noted above the synchronisation is performed over a non-secure connection. I would really like to see either HTTPS or SFTP support added. - Ian Y
- Changing the default shortcuts to whatever user needs/wants would be very helpful (most of firefox extensions have this feature preventing possible conflicts among shortcuts of installed extensions)
- My Wishlist for this wonderful app/service: multiple profiles (and merging capability), default ports to HTTPS, On "My Foxmarks" -- it should allow me to set privacy option to private/public (I just read that you guys are planning to build a search engine, I just don't want some stuff to be searchable by other people). - Raul M (Philippines)
- I'd like to edit my book marks on-line and set a option, on-line, that forces all the clients to take the server bookmark the next time they synch. Right now I have a jumbled mess that's going to takes hours to sort out. I have to edit all the BMs on one machine, force an overwrite on the server, go to each of the clients and force a local overwrite - not fun...
My Foxmarks
- HTTPS (SSL) support, I have stored some Login Infos on some URL's (PLESK,TYPO3 etc.). --212.254.193.46 12:22, 15 November 2006 (EST)
- I second this, too! I mean, everyone makes a big deal of needing to sync over SSL, so their
pornpasswords are encrypted, etc, and then we go and access all the bookmarks (and login credentials!)in plain-text over a non-SSL connection when we log in at my.foxmarks.com. Bit silly, hey. :p -- Thanks for the free cool product/service guys. :) - Third this. Foxmarks is great, very robust, and free! But MyFoxmarks access really should be https.
- I second this, too! I mean, everyone makes a big deal of needing to sync over SSL, so their
- Add bookmarks online to my Foxmarks, when you are using Firefox without your Foxmarks login/extension, it would be nice to login at Foxmarks.com and add the favorite there so that when you get back to your Firefox, you'll have the added web page upon sync. YES!!! This is a no-brainer.
-
How about logging out?And some information about when the sync was last done, from which TCP/IP address, and/or when someone last logged in to the My Foxcloud page ? Mark Baber. Updated 15:47, 9 June 2006 (CET).
- When I use Firefox Find to search for a string on My Foxcloud, only items in expanded folders are found. How about Expand All and Collapse All functions on the page? Or a built-in search on the page like the one in the FIrefox Bookmarks pane? --Bob Lent 10:40, 27 May 2006 (PDT). Updated 08:36, 29 May 2006 (PDT).
- Remove the case-sensitive username requirement for login to My Foxcloud (of course the password case-sensitivity should remain.) --CousinBug 07:27, 27 May 2006 (EDT)
- It'd be helpful to have links to My Foxcloud and Foxmarks home page somewhere in the extension option dialog (maybe an About tab.) --CousinBug 07:27, 27 May 2006 (EDT)
- I would like to be able to add a new bookmark at my.foxcloud.com --Josh
- Seconded. This would be useful when you have to use IE.
- Third! I often have to access my bookmarks from temporary computers.
- If you use the Firefox Bookmarks Toolbar Folder as a "Quick Launch" style bar (by deleting Bookmark names and just using favicons), your "My Foxcloud" page will be nearly useless. Links on that page are based on the "Name" field, so you end up with a list of icons and no links.
- That's really interesting -- we hadn't seen people use the toolbar that way before. Foxmarks doesn't sync your icons at all, actually, but there's no reason why your my.foxcloud.com page couldn't pull those icons in for itself. I'll take that as a feature suggestion and see what we can do about it. Thanks! --Todd 16:05, 16 December 2005 (EST)
- A while ago, we started displaying the URL for a bookmark on the My Foxcloud page for bookmarks that had no name -- this should at least make My Foxcloud more usable in such cases. It would, however, be really nice to have My Foxcloud lay out so that it looks just like your toolbar (with icons, etc.) That's still a ways out, though. --Todd 14:49, 15 March 2006 (EST)
- Why not show the bookmarks on the left as an navigation frameset and open bookmarked links on the right data frame? --Jonas
- Good idea! Have a look at this. --65.78.18.43 22:22, 10 August 2006 (EDT)
- RSS of the my.foxcloud.com page. I would like to add it to my start page at work where I cannot use I.E. Currently I have the yahoo bookmarks module on the my.yahoo page but without a sync to foxmarks
- What you want to come through in the feed? All of your bookmarks? Just new ones? Your favorites? --Todd 14:49, 15 March 2006 (EST)
- How about a Google Gadget for the Customized Google Homepage? One that lets you specify your username/password, specify how many bookmarks to show (All, first 5, 10, etc), and if it's ever implemented, actually be able to add bookmarks from it.
- I'd like to second this. The RSS idea above would probably work ok too.
- I'd really appreciate this too! It's the one key feature that'd make Foxmarks a 5 star app for me.
- me too!
- fourthed! Any plans? Should we keep our hopes up?
- I'd like to see an OPML feed of my bookmarks, with the option to make it public/private.
- Support Livemarks in some fashion on My Foxcloud
- Add bookmark icons & notes to my.foxcloud. See Xml Stylesheet and Example XML for example code
- I really would like to see my bookmarks from my mobile (treo), but for that to be efficient, it would need to store the password in a cookie, and have a way to display (on a different URL) more efficiently (simpler XHTML, with only lists). -- paul 05:01, 4 May 2006 (EDT)
- Paul : you should try a web service like skweezer or mobile leap on your treo : it will nicely transform your foxmarks into a simple html page - Pierre 21 sept 2006
- I would find a 'search' fonction very usefull. My bookmarks file is very big.
- Definitively a AJAX based live search would make a very useful feature. Much faster than opening folders/subfolders and finally finding out the bookmark resides in another subfolder of a different folder...
- Or, maybe easier at the moment: just add a "expand-all"-link so that one can search the page with CTRL+F. -- klaust 03:00, 30 August 2006 (MESZ)
- Check out http://my.foxcloud.com/frames/ --Todd 17:01, 30 August 2006 (EDT)
- Please support Blazer (Palm OS Browser) - http://www.palm.com/us/products/smartphones/treo650/blazer.epl - After Logging in the Folders Cannot be Expanded. Once this works I think you will find a large base of users on the worlds leading smart phone as a way to take their desktop bookmarks with them. Note Paul wanted Treo Support so its a similar request -- Andrew July 3rd 2006
- Andrew : you should try a web service like skweezer or mobile leap with Blazer : it will nicely transform your foxmarks into a simple html page - Pierre 21 sept 2006
- I second what Paul has said : please use a cookie to store the password. I use Opera on my Pocket PC phone (HTC Wizard) and it displays the foxmarks beautifully. But entering the login/password each time is a pain -- Pierre September 15th 2006.
- PS1 : that will also be useful for people who might use other browsers like IE, Opera, etc ...
- PS2 : the webwag bookmarks widget would do the job nicely as you can easily export your bookmarks to it with the webwag toolbar but unfortunately webwag doensn't seem to work on Opera Mobile ...
I recently had my Javascript disabled when using my.foxcloud.com and I recognized, that I couldn't use the tree functionality, meaning that all the links where "gone" - I couldn't click the [+] Symbol for expanding the folders. It should indeed be the other way round, so that EVERY FOLDER would be EXPANDED WHEN VISITING MY.FOXCLOUD.COM WITHOUT JAVASCRIPT!
cu, Jakov(a)gmx(.)at
- I think the frame thing is kind of neat, but for my personal use, it gets annoying, perhaps it should be an option? It also has problems with IE (you can't open folders, unless you click "open all"). Although it is of course a FF extension, I only use my.foxcloud.com when I'm away from my computer (and thus generally using IE). I also like the old logo better, though the site in general looks a lot more professional. Beyond that, your extension continues to be my all time favorite, keep it up! --Sir_Lewk
- Regarding the IE problem: we thought we had replicated this here, but now it seems to work. Have you tried restarting IE? Does that fix the open/close problem you've reported? Pleas let us know. --Todd 16:51, 18 October 2006 (EDT)
- Like someone else said, most of the time I'm forced to use IE6.x to look at my.foxmarks.com bookmarks. I actually use IE6.x for testing and keep it as my default on some of my breakdown computers (ones I continually reformat and reinstall for testing purposes). So far, I'd say that the bookmarks on the site effectively do not work. I have to wait several minutes for any tree to expand. It seems strange that they work fine in Firefox and not IE6.x. Is that some setting on your page programming that does that? Amyway, the sugggestion is to make my.foxmarks.com work in Internet Explorer. Don't worry, I won't be switching over to IE as my browser of choice anytime soon. JRLB 11/21/2006
- PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE let me add bookmarks via the web interface. Foxmarks is a godsend for me 99% of the time when I move between my laptop and my desktop, but when at work I use their system and often need my bookmarks. For this MyFoxmarks is amazing but when I need to bookmark a link I have to email myself with the link and add it later when I get home. Let me add bookmarks online please.
- AMEN Brother!!! I'd like the same ... to be able to add/edit/delete bookmarks via the web interface ... and don't forget the ability to save the tree of foxmarks bookmarks from the site down to an html file on the desktop! Imagine exporting the entire tree, or just the folder/subfolders selected ... then you could import them at work! Please ... this is an important one for us all! Thanks so much for an AWESOME extension!
Performance
- Please do something to optimize the bandwidth usage and avoid blocking the Firefox UI. I'm sharing my bookmarks between home and work PC, and at work I'm behind a proxy which causes a noticeable delay, and Firefox effectively is unusable for about two seconds when Foxmarks synchronizes. I had to turn off automatic sync, but that is not really desirable :-( I'm sure you can minimize the amount of data that is transmitted. --jens
- I don't think it's about data transmission, as that is handled asynchronously by Necko, the network layer in Firefox. The delay is most likely due to the sync algorithm itself. We're working on making it less instrusive. --Todd 14:49, 15 March 2006 (EST)
- Thanks for your reply. I have the impression that it got a bit better in the last few releases. But please look into the data transmission code again, as the delay is not noticeable at home. At work, we do not have direct HTTP access, and I know my proxy slows things down: it does so with web pages and downloads, therefore it must affect Foxmarks as well. --jens
- Blocking of UI here also.
- I'd also like to see the blocking of the UI eliminated. At the moment every time I start up firefox I have to wait 5 seconds for it to synch with the remote server which is obviously very annoying. On top of this if any actions are performed in the browser during this period (ie clicking links on the page, pressing page-up/down - any keys in fact), the behaviour of any open windows (Windows XP) becomes eratic once control returns to Firefox. At best (usually) this leaves me with the firefox browser window I was in in a minimized state or with it in the background, though at worst I've had the 'shutdown windows' screen display!!!
- I do have a fairly large bookmark file - around 1MB - though I am using my own webdav repo so presumably this should speed things up. Having said this though according to what was said above the actual transmission of data across the network should be transparent so I guess it's the synching algorithm causing the delay.
- Is there no way to make the synch process completely transparent to the user? I've been putting up with the 5 second delay for quite a while now hoping it would be sorted in a subsequent release, but unfortunately this hasn't happened as yet.
- Thanks for the email Todd, it seems that the mod_dav based repo I was using on my own server was the cause of the problem above with very slow syncing and apparent 'blocking' of the UI. Using my.foxclouds.com instead everything seems a lot smoother, network transfers are indeed in the background and the only noticable blocking is in the order of milliseconds rather than seconds. Feel free to delete this and the above strikeout text.

I'm also seeing significant blocking of the Firefox 2 UI when synchronization occurs. I'm syncing to an FTP server on a local LAN, so bandwidth shouldn't be an issue. I would like to see options to sync only at startup and shutdown of Firefox. My thinking is that if I'm working at a particular computer, my other computers would not benefit from an immediate sync whenever I change a bookmark. [TimG11 12 Dec 2006]
I 2nd the request for RSS support of the my.foxcloud.com page.
I also see significant blocking of the UI in Firefox 2 when syncing. I am using my foxmarks, and whether at work or at home it takes upwards of a minute to perform the full sync, such that I've had to disable automatic syncing and only sync on exit. [Psiclopz 6/14/2007]
Versioning
- A wiki history view of bookmark changes would be very helpful, elegent, and familiar to many users. --Bob Lent 10:50, 27 May 2006 (PDT)
- I realize that Foxmarks is becoming stable, but I would like to see some kind of integrated bookmark backup system. Perhaps it'd be possible to email our bookmarks to a specified email account weekly?
- Or perhaps have the sync server provide version control, so you can could go back and look at your bookmarks from some arbitrary time in the past. --Todd 14:49, 15 March 2006 (EST)
- I use subversion as a webdav backend and one login per machine. An "add newlines" option would be useful so i could use diff and "blame" to track changes instead of having it all on one big line. (patch with quick hack)
- I think versioning would be good. Sort of a snapshot backup of bookmarks. That way, if a user deletes a bookmark(s) they would have the option to pull up a snapshot or merge a snapshot.
- I would also agree - a backup (of deleted bookmarks) would be great. (MatS)
Sharing
- It would be nice to be able to share bookmarks.
- More than one Bookmark Folder. I can envision having my own bookmarks synched and then add a friend's synched bookmarks right along side. I know this is basically social bookmarking, but having it built into the browser would ROCK!
- For now, we're all about synchronizing bookmarks, but we're interested in services like what you describe; they would indeed rock. --Todd 14:49, 15 March 2006 (EST)
Sync Other Stuff
- I'd love to be able to sync ANY text file...maybe have it call diff and then Filemerge (or some other GUI frontend to diff). One example: I have many ASCII text notes files that are mirrored at home and work...if I make changes to some of them in one place, I need to sync the same file(s) at the other
- How about userContent.css? It's just another text file like bookmarks.html. Also, sessions would be great to sync; this also appears to be just another text file, although it can tend towards the large side.
- It would be great if we could sync the notes of the plugin QuickNote, which is very useful. I don't think it would be very hard to do because it just a text file.
- Foxmarks & NoScript are my two most used plug-ins for Firefox. Wouldn't it be nice if Foxmarks sync'd NoScript's URL white-list, so i can allow scripts for a site on the laptop, then bingo, my desktop PC has it authorised too.
- I would love it if you could get Foxmarks to be compatible with SeaMonkey or create a slightly downgraded version of it, if needed for it to be compatible. I love this extention and use it with 3 different computers and now I have just started to use SeaMonkey occassionally (its nice to have the web browser with email and newsgroups and IRC chat all in one that also support Mozilla plugins, extensions and themes) for when I want to use other larger programs at the same time that I want to check a few random things on a website and keep an eye on my mail and not use up too much of my computer's resources doing so (I want them for the other progams/games). That's it. I love the ability to create a new bookmark on one computer, have it auto sync to the server, have my laptop in the other room be turned on and auto sync with it's "new" update and I can then just wander into the other room, decide I want to go to that new website and have it be there already, just waiting for me, in my bookmarks list. Though I also agree, that a program to sync Extensions and Themes would rule too...
Yes, it would be great if Foxmarks would work with Seamonkey
- It would be cool it foxmarks could sync adblock list too, I dont know the amount of bandwidth something like this would take or how hard it would take to implement, but making this a "universal" syncing program would be worthwhile. Having to duplicate adblock lists on multiple computers can be a hassel. I think adblock would be the most common ad blocking extension? Maybe there are others that you would have to support instead? Thanks --watson1987 (you could try Filterset-G -raydancer)I prefer my own blocking terms, so an all in one program would be nice
- I'd like to be able to sync my extensions, too. Agree, even if it was at level that just carried extension names across to other machine so they could be downloaded afterwards. [Seconded. This function would be every bit as useful as copying bookmarks to a new/temporary machine, and would make Firefox truly portable - same functionality everywhere. Gary Sept 5th 2006.] Here's another vote for extension synching -- but not at the risk of breaking this wonderful extension! After struggling for years with bookmark synchronizers, I am thrilled to find one that just works!
- We read recently about a Foxmarks user who keeps a bookmark folder containing links for each of his extensions, and lets Foxmarks sync those bookmarks. Then when he needs to set up a new machine, he downloads Foxmarks first and then has links to his extensions ready to go so he can download and install. I'd wager it'd be easy to write a small extension that looks at your current list of extensions and automatically populates a folder with links for those extensions. --Todd 14:49, 15 March 2006 (EST)
- I love Foxmarks. I've just installed it and its working perfectly. I have a suggestion for you though, and if you could implement it, it would make you extensions even better and it would probably appeal to more people. What I am suggesting is why don't you also backup the extensions and themes, or if thats not possible, at least backup the name of them? That way, if i'm at another computer, and there is an extension I need but I can't remember the name of it, I can just use Foxmarks to help me! I don't know if it will be possible, but just trying to help you guys out! Keep up the good work!
- I'd like to be able to sync my favicons, too.
- me too. Favicon sync is must. Todd, please please reply to this. - jigar
- I'm here! Can you please explain why this is so important to you? (I'm not doubting that it is important; just want to understand better so we can prioritize our work.) --Todd 21:35, 21 June 2006 (EDT)
- Because i delete bookmark text in Personal toolbar for quick reference. Something like this
- Got it. After initial sync, the icons come back after the first time that you visit the bookmark associated with them, no? I realize this isn't ideal, but it is a work-around. Or maybe I'm still missing something. --Todd 01:09, 30 June 2006 (EDT)
- I'd like to sync favicons as well. Yeah, it usually associate favicons with newly visited bookmarks but not always. It's kinda annoying. -Ruffian
- Me too - I use just the icon on the bookmarks toolbar folder for rugular stuiff (I can fit more on) so synching the favicons would be great - Love the Extension anyway (MatS)
- Todd, some of us like setting our own favicons - as mentioned above, it's very nice to have icon-only based links in the bookmarks toolbar - resetting all of these by hand would be quite a chore (nulall)

- Favicons - I can't believe I have to tell you why: if you add them Foxmarks will be just.. perfect and I know you want it to be that way. Thank you - Marco Stucchi <the profiler>
- Favicons - The other deal here is that if a user (me, for instance) has a lot of bookmarks on a subject, the favicon makes it easier to see which ones to reopen. I do a lot of research on topics and when I want to refresh my memory, I go back to a few links. So the favicon actually tells me which sites I need to open again at that time. If I have to reopen each just to get the favicon back, then it defeats the point to having the favicon. Then it's just a pretty picture, not a piece of the title information. Maybe this is just an issue for those of us with lots of bookmarks, but that means we re-e-e-ally need a full-blown bookmark backup! Thanks for all the work here. - CD
- Favicons are not being synchronized (as they were with the pretty-much-defunct Bookmarks Synchronizer plugin). In fact, the process of automatic synchronization seems automatically to delete favicons that have been stored locally.
- Favicons - Another vote for synchronising favicons - they're a huge visual aid to finding bookmarks. Maybe make it optional if bandwidth could be a problem.
* Please synchronize Favicons. My only reason to NOT using Foxmarks is the fact that the synchronization automatically "deletes" (I know that this is technically not correct) favicons that have been stored locally. Exporting my bookmarks with Firefox means that they are stored within the "bookmarks.html"!
- Favicons - I totally want Favicons synched as soon as possible. I just started using Foxmarks, synched and then found out the favicons don't follow. As great as this extension is, I would have delayed using it. The reason I need the favicons is because I bookmark many, many (!) sites. The favicon saves space in my descriptive text since I don't have to put in the name of the website. -- Merry
- Favicons. Please add me to this list. I can't use a bookmark synchronizer that doesn't have this. All the icons on my Bookmarks toolbar are icons only, I don't have text labels. It is also not particularly helpful that the favicons come back after you visit a site because (a) I need the favicon there before I visit the site because that's how I know which button I need to press to get to the site where I want to go, and (b) not all my sites have favicons so for some of them I manually set the favicon myself using icons from elsewhere; this is a real pain to redo all the time. - Julian
- Favicons - Another vote for synchronising favicons - Cause i delete the name of my personnal bar to just have the favicon, and i use faviconpicker to customise my favicon. (excuse me for my english) - Pouark
- I have Foxmarks installed, but disabled right now. The reason is Favicons. You guys need to do something about it. It is the most requested improvement here, by far. Favicons are not just pretty things, it helps you tremendously to navigate through your bookmarks. I realized that after I lost them through Foxmarks. This can't be very hard to do. What is the reason it is not being done? To save space in your servers? Tood, do you mind shed a light on this! Any plans for support? Maybe you can make it configurable and turned off by default. This feature gotta be there or no Foxmarks usage for me...
- This one's a little far out there, but history syncing would be awesome, especially for users of the Sage RSS reader.
- That's not that far out -- it actually seems like a natural extension of what Foxmarks currently does. --Todd 14:49, 15 March 2006 (EST)
- Synchronizing saved passwords would be helpful, though it raises security/privacy concerns, at a minimum it should require a master password is used before enabling it, or only allow synchronizing to a private server?
I agree 100%. Saved passwords would be ideal.
I also would love this feature too. I realize others may not be as security concious, so it should be very obvious this is being done. Thanks for a great product! Paul March 6, 2007
- Synchronizing Thunderbird mail filters would be amazing (think "Thunderfilters"). I know this isn't the focus of a firefox extension, but I imagine the client-server communication would be very similar to Foxmarks. The only catch might be a totally different diff and sync algorithm.
- What about synchronising my Thunderbird Adressbook? A Thunderbird extension which synchronizes my contacts, my account settings and mail filters would be a really great thing. Maybe this is a new Foxmarks project based on the same technology.
- I agree. Perhaps it could be called "Birdtacts". I'm currently using the "Addressbooks Synchronizer" extension, which supports local and remote (FTP) files. But not everybody has access to a remote FTP server, so they'd benefit greatly from Birdtacts.
I use foxmarks to keep my desktop and laptop in sync. So now what happens when I delete a book mark from one and then I go to the second machine and sync it puts the book mark back. So i was thinking there needs to be like a master machine setting. Meaning if i want my desktop to be the master machine, when book marks are deleted using that machine they are deleted on the second machine, or 3rd, 4th however many. So that when the other machines are re-synced they do not put back the book marks you have just deleted. Make sense?? i hope so..if not let me know and i will try to make it clearer. Other than that great job!!! Keep up the good work!!
- Please add syncing of Search Bar search engines!
- Another vote for favicons here. I use favicon picker to assign icons to a) sites that don't have their own icons, b) pages within sites where I already have a link to the main site and where both would otherwise have the same icon, and c) bookmarklets. Like several others, I have lots of toolbar bookmarks with no text, just icons. I'm a bit concerned that some of my local bookmarks appear to have lost their icons. If this is actually the case, it would be a complete show-stopper for me. Google Browser Sync is glitchy and doesn't sync icons, but at least it doesn't delete them once you've manually assigned them. --Weeble 2006-11-10
- Greasemonkey Scripts:
- I would love the ability to synchronize my Greasemonkey scripts across machines! --Aaron, 2006-12-19
- Would it be possible to exchange bookmarks and sync specific folders with friends. E.G. Having a share folder that your friends could keep track of via RSS or simalar scripting instead of emailing links to all and sundry. As far as I know the code for this wouldn't be too tricky and if it fed into an RSS Feed then it would be a unique way of sharing interesting finds...
Tagris. 18/01/07
- Sync Password Safe also. But only if encrypted ;) --82.149.82.142 08:09, 31 March 2007 (EDT)
- I agree, password syncing would be amazing (google does it). I think that they would undoubtedly have to be encrypted, but a smart user would have password protection to their firefox password list - so why not just sync the hashed passwords and use the same password to unhash them? (nulall)
ScrapBook
It would be very useful to synchronize web pages saved thanks to Scrapbook. Thanks. Ayack.
I know this may not be appropriate request as far as syncing favorites but it would be great to be able to password protect folders in the favorites so you can put sensitive URLS like financial site in it. This is something that no one seems to have.
Thanks

Other Formats
- XBEL format would be highly appreciated. It would be possible to use Foxmarks with SiteBar Bookmark Server - a GPL licenced server. I have checked your RDF format and it is really not quite easy to process it on the SiteBar side. I too would like to see XBEL support, it might even make for an easier life during firefox 2.0 bookmark changes.
- Another extension called Bookmarks Synchronizer uses XBEL and i could use XSL and CSS files to browse the bookmarks directly on my webdav enabled server.
- I'd like to second the request for XBEL and also mention that on Foxmarks: Give us Feedback "fletch" requests XBEL and that on Foxcloud Blog >> Foxmarks 0.53 comment # 1 "Johan" requests it too. Maybe the easiest would be to to write a Foxmark <-> xbel two-way converter using e.g. XLT and keep it out of the Foxmark codebase completely --LightKnight 11:34, 27 September 2006 (CEST)
- XBEL is at the top of the list of other formats that we'd like to support, along with RSS/SSE and atom. --Todd 14:49, 15 March 2006 (EST)
- Any sign of XBEL format? It would make my life easier. Barry, 04 May 2007.
Other
- Travelling
I do quite a bit of travelling around the world and use webcafes to get access to the internet. It is great that I can access my bookmarks through the Foxmarks website, however I can't add new ones. Can you add the feature that would make it possible to add/ edit my bookmarks through the my.Foxmarks.com website? Thank you. Angelo - Bermuda (Currently in Mcloud Ganj, India)
- Travelling, part 2
To add to the previous suggestion. Why not create an iGoogle gadget/widget so I can have my Foxmarks on my own personalised iGoogle page together with my contacts, calendar, multiple email accounts, favourite feeds, etc. A google Gadget automatically showing my bookmarks would really make life in internet Cafe's a lot easier.
- Corporate usage
I make this suggestion public, having made it privately to Todd, because I would like to know whether anyone else would like to use Foxmarks in the way I do.
Since early 2004 the small company I set up to do research has been using Torisugari's synchronize bookmarks to pass bookmarks back and forth internally. We all do the same research, and the accumulation of a big set of bookmarks is a key element in our research. We now have a set of around 12,500 bookmarks.
Browsers as they are at present do not encourage collaborative research. Torisugari's bookmarks synchronizer was the key reason why I chose Firefox - because with some effort, everyone in our office could not only be looking at the same word and pdf docs in our database (on our network hard drive), read the same mail (through Thunderbird which allows sharing of mail), but also see the same bookmarks (by using Torisugari's synchronize bookmarks). (We have now 9 PCs on a W2000 Pro Advanced Server network).
Foxmarks seemed to promise that this would be much easier. The home page says: “Foxmarks is an extension for Firefox that synchronizes bookmarks across multiple machines.” Well, that’s exactly what we want to do. The problem with manually passing bookmarks back and forth using Torisugari's synchronizer is that everyone gets lazy, and after a while you discover that Annie has a completely different set of bookmarks from Cizi, and no-one knows which set is earlier, or more complete, etc.
We want everyone to have the same bookmarks. When Cizi adds a bookmark, Annie should be able to see it and benefit from it. That's what we want Foxmarks for.
Therefore I was absolutely surprised to hear privately from Todd that actually this isn’t what Foxmarks is supposed to do, that the typical user is doing something quite different. Apparently the typical user is synchronizing between his home and work PCs, or between two or three PCs. Personally I can’t understand why a user would want something as sophisticated as Foxmarks for this purpose, when he could just as easily e-mail bookmarks.html files back and forth, or use one of the many other synchronizing programs out there. But secondly, it would seem a waste of the enormous potential of Foxmarks, which potentially makes possible a whole new level of workplace collaboration.
So I would like to know, are any other users out there using Foxmarks like we want to? (Anyone who wants to discuss, please communicate with matthew@eastern.com.ph)
There’s a particular urgency to my question because I just can’t get Foxmarks to work properly. It works from our internal office network server PC (synchronizing between it and my home machine), but not from the network client PCs. It’s really puzzling. Todd hasn’t been able to suggest a reason why it isn’t working, and the outside ‘expert’ I brought in to look at Foxmarks’ interaction with our internal server network gave up in distress.
Our team members’ bookmarks are getting more different every day. Synchronizing them through Torisugari is going to be a heck of a task. It will be very time-consuming and error-prone.
So one thing I’d like to suggest is that: 1. Foxmarks’ potential for this kind of collaborative corporate work should be recognized; 2. A forum should exist where this and other Foxmarks issues could be discussed (assuming this here is not designed as a forum).
Finally, I'd really like suggestions about why we can't get Foxmarks to work on our network! - Matthew
- There's currently no way for a user to remove their account.
- the website needs an About page that has more description than just one sentence on the frontpage, to at least explain the basics of how it works. I wouldn't have known it synchronizes via FTP or WebDAV if I didn't root around the FAQ for that stuff. -- brendano@stanford.edu
- We suspect that most users don't care how it works, which is why that kind of info is relegated to FAQ. We're working on reorganizing the site, though, to make it substantially more usable. --Todd 14:49, 15 March 2006 (EST)
- Add a "Create new account" link on the Foxmarks settings dialog for users who miss the Setup Wizard?
- There's already a "Run Setup Wizard" in the Foxmarks setting dialog. --CrazyVas
- Multiple accounts. Sync with several different servers (ie Foxcloud and my own server).
- It would be nice to know that it was FoxCloud that was popping up the "software security device" dialog (I hate typing my password into dialog boxes that I am not sure where they came from).
- Allow two computers running Foxmarks to sync directly to each other
- Allow for viewing of bookmarks hosted on different sites (personal) not Foxmarks, with proper display of bookmarks and favicons. right now it's a very messy and unreadable xml file if you view it on a site other than foxmarks. how about releasing the code used to pretty up the bookmarks xml? not everyone can host bookmarks remotely for lots of security reasons
- It should be much better if the description of each web can be added. (cryobeer from China)
- Do you mean something beyond the "Description" field provided by Firefox? --Todd 14:49, 15 March 2006 (EST)
- Enable the Options button in the Tools-Extension list too for opening Foxmarks settings. (As logical as the placement is on the Bookmarks menu I actually didn't notice if for a day.)
- You mean Tools / Extensions / Options, right? That button does open the Foxmarks settings dialog, at least for me. Does it not work for you? --Todd 11:49, 30 March 2006 (EST)
- It does now...was greyed out before. Strange.. This added in a recent ver? (Perhaps possible that it had updated to a new version soon after I installed it and needed a firefox restart..silly me in that case. /thanks)
- Have a 'link check' functionality on the server side to identify foxmarks which have become invalid.
- Working with Firefox 2.0
- Is it possible to update this extension to work with Firefox 2.0 beta?
- Sure! When 2.0 Beta is released (next week?) we'll have at it. We're not expecting any difficulties. --Todd 22:01, 11 July 2006 (EDT)
- Any luck on getting this extension to work with Firefox 2.0 beta2 ? I'm excited to keep using your foxmarks but I love the new beta.
- Sure! Check out /wiki/Foxmarks:_Release_Notes#Foxmarks_0.77 --Todd 17:32, 7 September 2006 (EDT)
- Now that Firefox 2.0 is out, any chance on working on compatibility with Firefox 3.0a1? I just changed the <em:maxVersion> in the install.rdf of my other extensions, but that didn't work with Foxmarks.
- It would be sooo awesome if Foxmarks was somehow integrated with FireFTP - http://fireftp.mozdev.org/ - For example, maintaining FTP accounts/shortcuts (and possibly FireFTP settings?) across multiple computers (ex: Home and Work PC's) --Taber
- It would be fantastic if the account login was based on user-centric identities like OpenId and CardSpace.
- Importing
- I originally came to Foxmarks because I thought it might have the same functionality at Yahoo bookmarks. It almost does that, except I can't import my Yahoo bookmarks into Foxmarks. It imported everything under my Bookmarks menu correctly, but it doesn't touch the Yahoo bookmarks which are embedded in a "Yahoo" menu or appear in the Yahoo toolbar. I can probably force the Yahoo bookmarks to appear under the Bookmarks menu, but it will take 2 steps and I also won't have that sync'd up if I keep adding to it. Otherwise, I think this is a great extension! Good work!
- You are missing the fundamental item in your content index. What is Foxmark and how will it help a user in laymans terms. NPP
- It would be a nice enhancement to have the option to disable logging to a file, or set a maximum size. It seems this file just keeps growing, adding extra weight to my roaming profile (on windows).
I'd really like the option for Foxmarks to have a display on the status bar that showed the time since the last successful synchronisation (something like "Last Sync: 6 minutes ago" or "Last Sync: 2 days ago"). It would make sense for this display to change to something like "Sync in progress" when a sync is (you guessed it!) in progress. This display would give the user comfort that Foxmarks was alive and well (if a sync was only minutes ago) or to know if Foxmarks has problems (if the last sync was hours or days ago) and also to see at a glance if a sync is ongoing which might mean they don't get so stressed out by any performance glitch while a sync is going on because at least they'll know the cause. -- JulianL (8 May 2007)
Support for SCP
Any chance of adding support for SCP rather than FTP as the former is far safer and only relies on SSH daemon? Thanks, David Jameson
Any support for ssh would be appreciated. Jon
- If Firefox provides SSH support, we'd be happy to provide access to it, but we're unlikely to undertake development of an SSH client ourselves. --Todd 18:16, 12 October 2006 (EDT)
Support for sFTP is necessary for me. With clear-text passwords via ftp or http I cannot use it. Any idea of how/when it could be incorporated? Thanks! --KK
hi todd! thanks for the great extension! i'd like to know if Foxmakrs uploads the entire bookmark file while doing automatic synchronization or only the specific updated data? if it's the entire file...then it's a wastage of bandwidth, atleast for the people who have limited download limit.
once again, thanks for the really great extension!
saikat
- Saikat, Foxmarks does unfortunately transmit the entire bookmarks file. It's admittedly a waste of bandwidth, but it's really light on CPU. Regardless, we are planning eventually to transmit only deltas, but I can't commit to a specific timeframe for that change yet -- it requires a substantial change, mostly on the server side. --Todd 16:15, 24 October 2006 (EDT)
Hello A tool that check dead links will be very useful! Gremion 15.2.2007
I'd like to see a few things:
- Favicons - I delete the "Name:" text for everything on my bookmarks toolbar and leave only the url and the favicon. but then the favicon disappears when I install foxmarks on a new system (I do a lot of formats and reinstalls and I have about 5 computers I use on a regular basis.)
- also, I'm not sure this is your fault, but the meebo.com favicon is a pita to get to appear in the bookmarks, yet it will show up sometimes. if you guys could beat them to the punch at making this more reliable, I'd love it.
- fix the secure certificate for https so that it's for the right site.
- then make https the default. I don't like my password flying around in clear text any more thean it neds to be. ssh or sftp would be a nice alternative too, but I know you already addresed that.
- syncing other stuff like passwords would be cool, but I think that an encrypted connection should be required for that
